As an Australian, I do not sense any hostility toward the King's visit and we are pleased to welcome him. As for a republic, the famous Australian condition, profound apathy will ensure Australia remains a constitutional monarchy for some time yet. Many Australians take the view ,"If it works, why fix it"?

It does not cost anything to keep on having Charles III as a current King of Australia. Elections do cost a lot.
@ArsenicApplejuiceАй бұрын
One thing British commentary seems to miss is that Australian polling on the Republican movement isn't primarily a vote on how popular Charles is personally or even how popular the Monarchy is. Support for the status quo reflects a decreased trust in the government over the years to make these critical decisions. For these polls, the Republican model is more important than the Monarchy itself in many ways. Will we have a US-style president? French style? Israeli style? Until Australians feel comfortable with what their government will look like after the referendum, it's unlikely we will ditch the Monarchy.
@lindahope6139Ай бұрын

@SA-oy9pnАй бұрын
that’s your opinion based on no facts . what is clear the referendum would have been an overwhelming yes , but the liberals wanted members of parliament to elect our President and they knew the people would not vote for that

Mostly politicians are corrupt
@ArsenicApplejuiceАй бұрын
That’s my point. Uncertainties around the model of the republican form of government in Australia are more important than the relative popularity of Charles or the monarchy.

We all know how successful China is, but we have been brainwashed into believing that they will fail, just because others failed before them, and brainwashed into believing whatever the American owned news media tell us. It is about time that Australians developed confidence in themselves instead of just blindly following others. Remember the past, live in the present, and embrace the future.

Sadly the weather here in Sydney seems to default to rain and clouds these days more than sunshine in the last few years. We have had a quite a few sunny days recently, but it is spring and the weather is very changeable. In fact Sydney has, on average, twice the rainfall as London each year. However it tends to dump down and the next day will be clear. Canberra is predicted to be sunnier and warmer. Enjoy your stay.

We have had a cooler October this year, probably because the King & Queen were invited to join us. Better than a typical hot windy month that we have much too often. So consider yourselves fortunate. If the government proposed to do away with the monarchy, they would be in for a shock as most of us still prefer it to remain a monarchy. We already have a head of State with the governor general who isn't the choice of the people but of the Labor party. Who wants to live as a republic when you look around the world & see that none of them are successful & having a King doesn't cost us any money but we have a successfully run government system without changing it for something inferior!! The sooner the weasel gets voted out the sooner most of us will be relieved. Thankfully the MP in our electorate is a monarchist!!
@eliselewis6260Ай бұрын
Out of those statistics from polls that you read out. How many of those people that were the 43% in favour of republic? How many of them are actually Australian Citizens?? Because if people are not an Citizen of Australia they DO NOT have the Right to Vote!!!! So Australian residents enjoy all the same rights as us Citizens, except they do not have the Right to Vote.. !!! Only Citizens make the choices for Australia. Our forefathers in their millions put our constitution in place in '1901' and it is the best in the world, and people that don't like it who are not Citizens, can go back to where they came from!!!

Most Australians are happy to see Charles & Camilla touring, we're just not into making a huge fuss. Australia becoming a republic will happen eventually, at the moment we have a bunch of terrible politicians so not really a viable alternative. Charles is welcome here by most of the public. It seems the media is driving this silly story of Australians not wanting him here and some rude politicians.
@purem9150Ай бұрын
Seriously, who in their right mind would think a country's head of state should ever be a foreign resident with competing interests. The issue for most Australians is they don't want the US Republic model and would prefer a model more like the Irish model of a rotating head of state that is not nominated by politicians.. There are also a significant number of Australians that have grave concerns about the lack of regard and failure to comply with the Australian Constitution's reserve powers that require the Crown only to take instructions from the elected government which Charles, Mountbatten and Martin Charteris failed to do, during the 1975 Whitlam dismissal crisis and that Charles has subsequently been proven, through his own correspondence, which the Crown then refused to provide to the Australian Archives in accordance with the Australian Archives Act and had to be taken to court to be compelled to comply with. This correspondence demonstrated Charles direct complicity.
@brontewcatАй бұрын
Regarding 1975 - you would have preferred a situation where the government ran out of money and could pay its public servants and its bills. Whitlam wanted a half Senate election and the subsequent election showed he would have lost. If you want to blame someone blame Fraser for playing politics with the Budget. The way Kerr did it was wrong. Kerr should have warned Whitlam that Whitlam had to call a full election or he would have sack him. If Whitlam still pushed for half senate election, then Kerr would have had to sack him. By the way - if we have a directly elected head of state, what happened in 1975 is likely to happen more often. You get another political impasse and the PM goes to the President with a request for a half senate election. The President says - well I got more votes than you and I don’t think you can win so I am sacking you and dissolving Parliament. I think if we are to become a republic, then the president has to non political and appointed by Parliament, so that person is answerable to Parliament.
@Stand663Ай бұрын
@@brontewcat. You’re complicating things mate. All British territories are uniquely self governing anyway. It’s the people who are in charge, through their vote, not any government. What you have works perfectly well Also the Commonwealth realms, all have equal status on matters.
@brontewcatАй бұрын
@@Stand663 I think you have misunderstood what I was saying. Firstly, as many republicans point to 1975 to support their position, I was pointing out that Kerr was caught between a rock and a hard place in 1975. It actually wouldn’t have mattered if it was a GG or a president. Secondly I was pointing out if we become a republic it can’t be under a popularly elected head of state, which is what most people who support the idea of a republic want. It would have to be a president who was appointed by and answerable to Parliament to prevent a constitutional crisis if the president disagreed with what the government wanted. I actually support the status quo.

So the referendum part is not that referendum won’t be done its timing. Tactically the referendum won’t be put to the Australian people in the short term. Reason, we have to work out what political system we want post removing the monarchy and do we still want to be part of the Commonwealth. Also we need to factor in our brother and sisters in New Zealand as technically in the Australian Constitution New Zealand can vote to join Australia which could be a possibility in a new joint post monarchy referendum. 5 years from now you will see how this forms.

Remember the massive crowd of young people as William and a healthy Catherine walked on Manly Beach? Take a drive to Balmoral, make sure you're in the front seat Lizzie as you drive down the hill, and enjoy this lovely place tucked into Sydney Harbour. TS 4:54 The male host confuses the Monarchy with the man. the man experiencing cancer is not the Monarchy. The cancer might make him a better Monarch but the man is not the King. The Monarch rs there to serve the subjects so Of Course he showed up cancer or no cancer. The Monarchy represents 1000 years of human evolution that brought the rule of law, the financial system, science, civility. If Australia becomes a republic, the Australian leaders as we see all over the world are there to serve themselves, not the citizen of Australia. China will move in, the Arabs or the Russians could take over. The Australians and many people in the Free World ( the commonwealth) assume that democracy is a given. The power of greed is winning in America.
