Idk, maybe because he was a guest? The whole concert was mainly about Luciano Pavarotti, and this was the only piece that Perlman played, except when he sang with Pavarotti. He probably didn't put much time into this short performance, because he didn't need to.

Beautiful (as always from Mr Perlman!) I wonder if his left-hand thumb ever gave him problems as a child learning violin. The same would go for the right-hand too actually.... holding the bow with a "rounded" thumb position.

Did anyone else notice that he cut the 6th variation, the one with the wicked descending scales in thirds and the ascending scales in tenths? I've studied this piece at various points in my life and that's the variation that scares me the most. If I were performing this live and only had the one shot, I'd probably do it, too. All that being said, he plays it pretty well for a Franco-Belgian player, but he can't touch Heifetz.
