Thighs? Only to a certain point... Don’t forget how strict beauty standards are there. I would say only chest and butt are allowed to be bigger and hips are more about the bones being a little wider rather than having more weight there.

@@irenebubble990 I would say thighs as Hwasa became a hot topic after she gained more weight (yes, she did also get hate but she's also got more #1 in brand reputation after tht). Ryujin is another eg, she gained slight weight in the thighs and people love her more now. I'm sure there's more examples, I just can't think lol. And I don't think females can change their chest/boobs tht much after puberty. But I could be wrong. But if people gain more weight in the upper half of the body, they typically get hate (like arms, torso). Idols with a bigger chest aren't tht popular (eg, Jihyo). Somi and Jessi are the only exception I can think of.

I think its because once idols reach normal weight range they start looking less doll like but more "realistically" human and people realise they can be similar to them and it's not that interesting anymore. There is a certain appeal in what seems unattainable afterall to humans. Therefore many idols experience much more fame when notably underweight. (Enviably thin waist, extremely petite frame etc) There is few to the exception of that effect, but those had to fight hard and even then I think most of them don't get the amount of attention for their visuals that IU had eg for her sweet potato diet body.

You unknowingly tend to imitate the people you look up to and I did the same as her and dieted my body till I got severely sick several times. It may be due to the amount of misinformation regarding health and dieting during those times, plus I was young and impressionable, but I wish I could go back and tell myself that I was healthy and beautiful just the way I was. Nowadays in Europe when you see an interview with a star, they never or very rarely ask about the star's "diet" or mention the star's proportions (height, weight). It seems so strange to me to even ask such question. Unless they are extremely thin (and I would be worried about that person) I would not ask what they eat... It seems like in Asia (especially in S. Korea) people are so obsessed with appearance and weight. There are more important things out there, like does the person even sing well, what do they sing about, how is their life, what are their dreams, what is their style in clothes, what is their family like, have they travelled recently... No, they ask about diets in Korea... ugh. When someone would say that they lost 4 kg in 4 days, people would be schocked, but in a bad way, like "You have an ED. You shouldn't be so obsessed with your weight, that's not healthy." I think this diet-obsessed culture was here in Europe about 20 years ago as well, but the negative outcomes and consequences were more talked about later on and the culture changed. S. Korea has some development to do. It must be so difficult to be a self-confident woman in S. Korea if you don't have any plastic surgery done and your figure is not "perfect".

Wow. Korean standards are so unhealthy. She looks beautiful at all of those weights. Such a shame she is pressured into maintaining an unhealthy BMI. I was a thin as that in my twenties. Like IU I was already naturally skinny but felt the need to be ‘perfect’. I finally got a messed up thyroid. These extremes will have health implications down the line. I learned that at a healthier BMI I still looked good and felt a lot better. Low weight can actually cause anxiety and depression.

i wish the media would stop giving light to topics that talk about celebrities bodies. it’s so detrimental to one’s state of mind we don’t even realize it until someone brings it up.

I honestly think IU can have any weight and still be famous. Just talking about collaborations, the one she did with suga skyrocketed and the one with gd was also a hit. I guess she can focus on collaborating with artists with big fandoms to maintain popularity without thinking about her physical appearance

Its so sad to see how much value people put on a number on a scale, a number that doesn't even define your health. She is so talented and brave because she always stood by her art, she is a writer and a producer and every kpop idol thinks highly of her baceuse of that. I hope korean society and society in general stops putting so much value in physical appearance and focus more on talent and other waaay more important things that people have to offer rather than weight or bEaUtY.

the message at the end does have truth but i also think a lot of kpop fans are changing perspective and since there are so many more international fans a lot of kpop idols are praised for being confident in not super skinny bodies and weighing more than what is “acceptable” and i hope this thinking only progresses further bc there are still so many ppl who think one standard is the only standard.

It's 2021 and she went on another crazy diet and is super thin again. It's sad but it's part of the job, look at all of these idols diet trending left and right, IU is not the only one. Korea's entertainment industry is harsh and very unforgiving. You are only famous and relevant when you look pretty. But pretty is not thin, or having beautiful features, or being a good person. Beauty in Korea means absolute perfection, but not too much perfection or else you will get hate for it. And that image of "beauty" must be mantained at all times and change accordingly to the trends, or else if you fail to keep up you fade out in the most merciless way possible. You get mocked, you become a constant source of nasty rumors until your image and reputation is compeltely destroyed by the lies, and no matter how hard you try to either ignore it or defend yourself, people won't listen and won't be happy unless you "get what you deserve". So many "visuals" in kpop have been driven over the edge due to the pressure to be perfect all the time. The need to be the right amount of thin, always look at least 10 years younger, be polite all the time, and not be too successful or people grow tired of you...I honestly don't know how kpop artists do it. It must be so exausting, and the worst part is that once you are in and get some level of success it must be very hard to leave the limelight without being viewed as a failure.

east asian beauty standards are so harsh, and change with every person! in my opinion, most k-pop idols are really underweight and the whole society needs to stop focusing so much on visuals. anyways very informative video!

Okay what???? I didn’t know Zeze was misunderstood like that. Personally, Zeze and Red Queen are my favorite IU songs. WOW.... I am shook!!! And it’s sad to see so many idols struggling with the harsh beauty standards and diets. I think a lot may have bulimia but don’t go as far as to admitting it and talk about it in a serious way. I think Korean variety shows and such try to not add that serious tone to serious matters as they fear it brings down the ‘mood’, when they are supposed to be entertaining and funny and not someone who talks about actual issues and things people actually experience. I am proud of IU for opening up about it in a serious way and not just half of the truth as in (yes I have some diet problems) but stating what’s truly going on and how far her eating disorder really goes.

How could IU’s parents let her live alone in a studio apartment as a elementary school student to train to be an idol? She ended up finding success but that would of been so hard for her as a kid and traumatising. Imagine how many kids go through that sort of stuff but never make a debut or don’t become successful. So many people criticize other people for being too "fat" and especially for kpop idols sometimes it's a problem if they're too skinny like it's not they're fault don't come after them they're just trying to live up to the standards our world has set out for them.

It's like that with eating disorders. You end up sliding from one to the other. Your weight is flip-flopping. On one end, you get fat-shamed and on the other, skinny-shamed. You truly can't win. The only way to overcome it is to just accept your natural weight and body the way it is. You can't force your body to become something else and you have to learn to be comfortable in it. The best diet is no diet. Just try to give your body the nutrients it needs and learn to listen for when you are no longer hungry - not overeating but not restricting yourself either. Don't deny your cravings, otherwise they'll build up and cause you to binge. Try and disconnect from your codependent relationship with food. Don't use food to reward yourself or to compensate for negative feelings or events. Food is just food. It's there to keep your body healthy and functioning. It's not your therapist and it can't give you love. The same goes for hunger. Learnt this the hard way. Later on, once you can actually eat regularly without overeating, restriction or compensating practices, it will feel so good. Don't give up.
