There is an interview with IU in which she explains that 'greed', whether for abstract or material things, is fine. In fact, we shouldn't feel ashamed of wanting things for ourselves. "Shopper" is the most direct reflection of that interview.

Heard another reactor who speaks Korean say that in Korean, they use the same word (in the lyrics) for both ‘greed’ and ‘ambition’ - such that it doesn’t necessarily have the same negative connotation native English speakers would think of

As a fan of DPR IAN, it's interesting to see his take on an IU music video. I think this is the first time he directs for a female artist. It's also fun to see your reaction, as someone who hasn't seen DPR IAN before, because his music videos always tell a story. His soloist songs are about moments he wished his bipolar disorder didn't ruin. Conceptually, his MVs portray his manic lows and manic highs with personas (MITO, Mr. Insanity respectively) and the visuals are just crazy. If you do react to him, I recommend doing it in chronological order. He also has a 10min "movie" and he's planning to do a full-length movie to be released in 2025. After you see his work, I think you'll be more than stunned. The lore is real.

also, DPR LIVE was the one who had a collab with Hwasa "Hula Hoops"

i left u a playlist on the discord on deep dives, i wasn't sure where to put it. trust me that as a lesbian gal allergic to boy groups (in terms of not being able to get obsessed), i really admire him as a filmmaker, musician, and also as a person trying to be his best version (also yeah he's hot lol)@@roguereacts

yup, dpr is more like collective than a group. they don't make songs as groups, but they release music under the name dpr ___ and use the same producers/creative teams, etc. ian used to be on a boy group called c-clown but he left bc they wouldn't give him creative freedom. everything ended on a bad note and he seemed like the bad guy for speaking the truth of the industry. then he decided to create dpr to express his creative ideas. @@roguereacts

Its great to hear your break down of the MV. On the map you can see footsteps, this links to her "Chat-shire" album her first album she produced and wrote the lyrics for all to song (when she was 23 Korean age) Now in the winning (32 korean age) she responds to this. In the chatshire album there is a map and there are footsteps which form a trail across that map. It seems like it continues on to here. IU said after her Golden Hour concert (which started at 7PM sunset) she knew how to express this idea in a song.

This video does appear to have a connection to HOLSSI although in a different way than her other videos. In Holssi she has a shopping cart. And the general message is she is a single seed taking a another road that is full of the unknown and risk. Stepping out of her cage which has been her safe place. It will leave it at that for this HOLSSI. There is a hint of magic in it also. SHOPPER takes over from their in that she is going for it. She wants it all. It is definitely a new era for IU. She has never performed a concert in the west. And NO Korean born and raised purely a soloist has ever tried to break into the Western market in general and the US in particular. ALL of the soloist, most of which have been males, were first apart of a group and toured the US as a group building a fan base upon which they were able to use as a foundation to come back as a soloist. The first kpop singer to do this was Rain. Interestingly enough he has recently announced that he is returning to the US for the first time in 15 years. One has to wonder if part of his return might be as a featured guest artist at one or more of her concerts this summer. In HOLSSI IU's shopping cart is loaded with stuff. I wonder if any of those things might also connect to Shopper. In summary, you have the 1st MV, relling about going against the advice, breaking free and flying to to the top. And the 2nd one telling us she wants it, she will be victorious in achieving everything she wants to achieve and sime may say thats being greedy, she is saying that is dreaming big and going for it. I have a more detail, also lyric line by lyric line breakdown of my interpretation of Holssi. I am still developing my thoughts on Shopper. But Kudos to you. You are perhaps one of the fastest IU MV learns I have seem. Lookingvfor and breaking down all the lithke details which all have meaning and many ofvwhich are essential to UNDERSTANDING her MV's along with a level of knowledge of her history. But so many watch her MV's one time and know nothing of her and try to interpret then. Of cousre they are certainly entitled to do so, but they ALWAYS miss the point or mesage IU has spent her creativity and talent creating for her audience. So I highly compliment you in your effort to understand what the message IU is wanting you to get. We may not always get it all, but its not from a lack of effort.

Very well said and I have to say I agreed 💯 👍 I enjoyed IU reactors the most when they dig deep into her songs/lyrics/MV and we all know every little details always has deep meaning.

I don’t know the DPR IAN influence here, but this just seems a crazy, random, festive MV like Red Shoes, with many clever things included worthy of Explaination video… unlike Love Wins All and Holssi with music and video coming together, my first impression was that video was kind of annoying and trying too hard to win the audience, distracting from a great song… maybe my opinion will change with more views
@phiz80925 ай бұрын
Ian directed the whole video and took all of IU’s suggestions while filming and made them a reality. The video is exactly how IU wanted. If you think it’s annoying then ok that’s your opinion.

I’ve liked it more and more with every listen and it’s a song which is even better live. Your comment about IU seems to affirm what many of us love and appreciate about IU… that she is so hands on and really owns her production and video process
