Great to watch these highlights of a wonderful era of tennis. Roscoe Tanner - such an incredible server and fine grasscourt player. Wish I'd got to see him play more and live asI was just getting into tennis around that time. Loved watching Ican Lendl play - especially seeing him play against and frequently beat McEnroe. I have huge admiration for Lendl, recognised his weaknesses on grass and worked on his game to turn hinself into a mighty grasscourt player who could serve and volley. Gutted he lost both his Wimbledon finals, but then savoured success as coach of Andy Murray.

Roscoe Tanner was such a different kind of player from most everyone else on the tour back then. You can certainly see how and why he was a difficult match-up for top players like Borg, Lendl, Connors, and others. And he was certainly capable of beating any of them on a given day. Very talented player with a cannon for a serve. For the longest time he held the record for the fastest serve ever recorded clocked at 153 mph until Andy Roddick finally broke it many years later with a serve registering 155 on the radar gun.

Just a comment on this, Mano Alex. The good news is that Roscoe Tanner DID win a Grand Slam tournament. It was the 1977 Australian Open (January version). He won that version by defeating Guillermo Vilas in the final. At the end of that year, there was a 1977 Australian Open December version, and this was won by Vitas Gerulaitis, who defeated John Lloyd in the final.

Constrasting styles of serve. Tanner, with a low toss, almost hitting the ball on its way up. Lendl, high toss, waiting for it to drop before hitting. Both very effective.
@jimmybrice63602 жыл бұрын
are you kidding ? lendl's high toss was a detriment to his serve. roscoe is the only player i have ever seen who could do that. his serve came at you very fast
@ericfreeman57952 жыл бұрын
@@jimmybrice6360 Even though Tanner had a tremendous serve, kind of like the Andy Roddick of the 70s, others like Henri Leconte and Kevin Curren also hit the serve almost on the rise. But I disagree that the high toss was a detriment for Lendl. 8 Grand Slam titles, and 270 weeks at number 1 speak for themselves. Although Tanner's serve was one of the fastest in history, with that I totally agree.
@jimmybrice63602 жыл бұрын
@@ericfreeman5795 i dont know anything about leconte and curren - will have to look at their serve. the high toss is a detriment, no matter how many grand slams someone wins. if he had been able to toss the ball like tanner, and actually hit it, his serve would have been better. neither tanner nor lendl were great athletes. and lendl was never able to break thru against connors, borg or mcenroe, until they started downhill. no way was lendl as good as that triumvirate. if you werent there, you wouldnt know the following - but for years lendl was known as the choker who could not win the big one. when he was number one, i dont think he had anyone as good as those 3, who dominated tennis for 15 years or so. just a note on tanner - he was still using aluminum rackets, not the rackets of today. i think his record is in the low 30s, which was absolutely ridiculous at the time. i would like to see one of today's players take an aluminum racket and hit the ball like that - LOL. but his speed was not his biggest asset. it was the returner had no way to judge the ball, it left the racket so quickly. which is why a low toss is so good. but it takes both a quick delivery and unbelievably good timing. tanner had good volleys, but is somewhat awkward at the baseline. lendl has awkwardness in all of his movements. but he is known to have worked more diligently than most any other player (except maybe connors), to get the best from what he had.
@ericfreeman57952 жыл бұрын
@@jimmybrice6360 About the low toss vs. the high toss serve, the low toss was more frequent in players before the 80s. Players like Newcomb, Rosewall, Connors, Vilas, etc, all hit the ball at the apex of the toss. In the 80s, players like Lendl and Graf preferred the high toss. Hitting on the rise requires perfect timing, and a few players like Tanner and Curren preferred that style. But if we observe the big 3, Fed, Rafa, and Nole, in slow motion, all three hit the ball on its way down. The toss may be higher or lower, but it's definitely on it's way down. Sampras also had a higher toss and hit as the ball descended. On the other hand, Sam Groth, who has the fastest serve registered at 163 mph, hits the ball at it's apex. I think it depends on the individual. Being on the business end of a Tanner, or a Sampras serve, is equally as frightening. About Lendl being a "late bloomer", it's true. But he did reach a ton of finals, he just needed that final push. Another great that suffered a similar fate was Agassi, losing several grand slam finals, until he won the least expected, Wimbledon at 22 years of age. After he was 25 he won 7 more slams. Lendl also won all his slams after he turned 24. Connors, Borg, and McEnroe were early bloomers. Medvedev just won his first at 25. To each his own.
@jimmybrice63602 жыл бұрын
@@ericfreeman5795 i dont recall any player ever hitting it on the way up, which i think tanner did. although it probably was close to the top. if you watch beginners play, they all toss the ball real high. lendl's toss is so high, that it really looks poor. graf's forehand was effective, but terrible form. she jerked her shoulder something terribly. the physics of it is that you want the ball to be at the point where your racket would normally be, with the ball stationary. that is extremely difficult to do, even for most pros. rosewall and connors are my 2 favorites. but each of them had weak serves. rosewall and laver ruled tennis for a long time before connors, borg and mcenroe took over. of those 3, i think connors had the best overall game, cuz he was great from the baseline, and was good at the net. his serve was his only weak point.

Tanner 153mph. _Please_ . Not even close. Just shows you how dodgy 1970s technology was for measuring stuff like speeds. Look at some of Tanner´s 1st serves in this match and on a few aces, the ball probably hits the back-screen level with the ball boys´ kneecaps. That´s probably 110-115mph _maximum_ . On a couple of Tanner´s serves down the T, the ball sits up for Lendl to return no problem. (go and watch the first few minutes of Federer v Roddick from 2009 and see by comparison, the speed of Roddick´s 130-135mph serves to what Tanner is dishing up here. Not even comparable.) What made Tanner´s serve so effective was the contact at top of ball-toss. And, the put the clincher on it, Wimbledon´s grass was much quicker surface in the 1980s.

In the early 2000's Wimbledon grass was changed and the bounce no longer kept low and therefore lost its uniqueness. You can't compare the type of grass from the 70/80's to 2009. Obviously the rackets and strings changed too and made harder hitting much easier.
