I know there are many Ivanchuk's fans around and I like him myself, but I wouldn't bet on him during any longer match. He is very much a man who's play strongly depends on his mood. And his mood changes follow the Moon's phases.

That is true -- he is 2900 one day, 2500 the next. All depends on how planet Ivanchuk is aligned. I think he is as knowledgeable as a Fischer, but lacks Bobby's 'killer instinct,' above all. Is more of an artist than a pure competitor

10:27 67... Kb3! was crucial zugzwang - this is a knights and pawns endgame so you cannot lose the tempo (vide Grischuk vs Navara yesterday). E.g. 67... Kc2 68. Nb4+ Kc1 69. Na2+ Kb2 70. Nb4 Kb3 71. Nd5 and you have the same position but black to move. The whole idea of winning was to force white to move from this position. Everything wins but play any other move and you have to calculate new variations on the increment against Kramnik.
@agadmator7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was sure Kc2 was winning as well
@Iblis2Lakon7 жыл бұрын
It's still winning because you have protected passer on the 6th rank (from black perspective), but it's much more complicated than Ivanchuk zugzwang that forced Kramnik to start giving up pawns. I found some interesting variation after 67... Kc2 68. Nb4+ Kb2 69. f3?! when black has problems. E.g. 69... exf3 is a draw, 69... Kc1 leads to a win but black needs to play every move perfectly and not every move is natural: 70 Na2+ Kc2 71. Nb4+ Kc3 72. fxg4 Kxb4 73. gxf5 Kc3!! 74. fxg6 d2+ 75. Kd1 Kd3 76. g7 e3 77. g8Q d2# and Stockfish confirms that this the only winning line after 69... Kc1.
@agadmator7 жыл бұрын
+Paweł Szymański I'll just pretend Chucky saw this and therfore played Kb3 :)
@Iblis2Lakon7 жыл бұрын
On the move 64, Chucky thought for 12 minutes and 48 seconds. I believe, he saw this. There's funny 'insult' endgame that Chucky won against Jobava www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1782562 After last Chucky's move, Jobava thought over 5 minutes and resigned. Then everybody wonders why he resigned and Chuck explained that more or less: 'king here, pawn there, you know, we're everybody grandmasters'. Even if most of GM's can't understand that position without few minutes of analysis (including GM Seirawan who commented that game).
@bencaruso13467 жыл бұрын
Agreed - Good catch 67...Kb3 was completely 'crushing' where there was no 68.Nb4+ or just 68.Nb4 that would be helping White a bit after ...Kb2? or ...Kc2? which would've been a bit more complicated (and time consuming) to convert into a win! Ivanchuk played an extremely accurate Masterpiece of a game!

The moment I saw Ivanchuk won and moved on to Round 4 of the chess world cup, I immediately thought that agad will be happy with this result. Carlsen and Nakamura are out of the competition. With all due respect to the rest of the competitors, Caruana must be quietly fancying his chances in this tournament with a relatively easier path to the final round in the bottom half of the pairing tree. The top half though is a murders' row that still includes Aronian, So, Vachier-Lagrave, Nepo, Grischuk, and Ivanchuk. Anyone from them can win this.
@peterhansen87687 жыл бұрын
So and Nepo are on Caruanas half though. :) But yeah, the upper half still seems a bit stronger even though Kramnik, Karjakin and Carlsen are out.

I really thought this game was incredibly strong and it is a very long and complicated one but you presented it in a very nice way. I look over this game as I save games li,e this with Engine Analysis and notes to look back on and refresh. I didn't like Kramnik's 33.Qb5? as it seems to break the harmony between his Queen and his other pieces; An Engine Analysis prefers 33.Qd1 which would've instead added guard to his isolated pawn at d4 which was crucial to defend as you pointed out when compared to taking Ivanchuk's pawn at g7 (which eventually lost the game after 59...exd4). Maybe Kramnik was holding with some of the Engine continuations 33.Qd1 Qb7 34.Ra2 Rb4 35.Bf4 Rb3 36.Ne5 and so forth or 33.Qd1 Kf8? 34.Qh1! and Kramnik is Equal with then maybe ...f6 35.h5 fxe5 36.hxg6 Ke8 (forced) 37.Qh8+ on so on, but we have no way to know if those Engine moves would've been actually played. Ivanchuk made a ton of Engine Accurate moves - His play was very sharp and precise! Moves like 55...Kd5! 58...e5! Wow! 59...exd4 leading to moves that were totally 'forced' for Kramnik to play (like 61.Kd1 and I noticed if 61.Ke3?? Oops! Ivanchuk would've had ...Bd2#) and then it was all Ivanchuk after that with 67...Kb3!! 68...Nxf2! and 71...h3! (mate in 17) Wow! what an awesome game by Ivanchuk - He was only playing for a win the entire game and fought hard to get it! Thanks for the great presentation! :)

At 4:40, I’m wondering why Knight to a2 - forking the Knight and Queen - wasn’t played.
@the_bottomfragger5 жыл бұрын
I assume you mean forking queen and rook. My guess is Qa1 would defuse the fork, if knight takes, the queen simply takes a8 with check. Lot of variations I can't calculate after that but the knight would be in a weird place and easily hunted I guess.

Small question, as I don't really understand the world cup as a whole. Does the winner become the world champion or does Carlsen defend his title in 12 games + a possible overtime like with Aronian?
@izzya81327 жыл бұрын
The World Cup isn't related to the World Championship. They are just badly named. Carlsen will defend his title in 2018 in the World Championship match. Against who? The winner of the Candidates Tournament. The Candidate's Tournament is a tournament of 8 players, and there are various ways you can join the Candidates. One of the ways to join the Candidates Tournament is to be one of the two finalists in the World Cup. Because of that, the World Cup is very important for people who want to challenge Magnus.
