The 12-team FIDE World Team Championship starts with the teams split into two groups, with the Top 4 teams after a round-robin qualifying for the quarterfinals. Matches are played over four boards, with 2 match points for a win and 1 for a draw.
The games are rapid, with 45 minutes for the entire game, plus a 10-second increment starting from move one. In the knockout stages two rapid matches are played. If the teams are still tied, they switch to 3+2 blitz and keep playing matches until we have a winner. Official website: worldteams.fide.com

This endgame reminded me of the notorious 17th match game between Korchnoi and Karpov from 1978, where Korchnoi was a pawn up going into the endgame, but Karpov's knights plus Korchnoi's time trouble turned a winning endgame for Korchnoi to a checkmate for Karpov. In both this game and the Karpov game, black defended very strongly to turn the tables.

8:46 26.Nd7 Rexd7 27.Bxd6 is a interference, far rarer than a Novotný interference. (Wow, a live Plachutta captured OTB in the wild!) A Plachutta requires two line-movers of the same type, and two sacs to lure + deflect one of them. Here, the two lines of defense are (1) Qd8 protects Bd6, and (2) Re7 protects Rc7, while also Rc7 is pinned to White's Rc8 threat. White surely calculated that 27..Rxc2 29.Rc8 pins his Q, but accepted this line as the least-costly solution: Q(+RB) for RN(+RB), almost equal and worth fighting out. 26..Rcxd7 27.Bxd6 is worse, down at least an exchange whether the Rd7 moves or stays.
