@@aphexon. of course it makes sense....because the move ..in a chess game will work based only on what the opponent plays...so if i play bg6...but my opponent misses the correct reply...my defense has worked....the fact that i would lose with best play by my opponent is irrelevant,,,,until....he actually plays it...and we see this all the time...commentators.."he played great defense...but it came up short"..or "he played great defense to save the game...but if so and so had more time he might have found the winning move"

I agree. It's at that point when we realize that neither player is following any established lines. It's all uncharted territory, where pure chess ability is the only factor, rather than one guy having been more studied in a certain position.

My favorite game of all time was between Ivanchuk and Kasparov in Linares in 91 I believe. Kasparov was in his prime and a young Ivanchuk made Kasparov look like a amateur. He had almost all of Kasparov’s pieces in one corner of the board. Kasparov didn’t get anxious about playing many people in those days but Chucky was one of them.

Falkbeer counter gambit. I play KG and the counter gambit.....is just that.....a counter. Accepting the KG is a quick way to lose if white knows what to do.

I was a King’s Gambit player and peaked around 1800 USCF, when black isn’t ready for it you can do some damage but good players refute it fairly easily

The King's Gambit is widely dismissed and grossly underrated. Some of the top players in history, including the modern era, have played it. There are positional plusses besides slam bam sacrificial attacks that merit a closer look.

Ivanchuk had another king's gambit game last year. I think it was a win against Peter Leko in the Legends of Chess event, the chess24 tournament with all the greats playing each other online.

When on my high school chess team in the 1970s, I played King's Gambit every chance I could because in many cases my opponent had never seen it before. I studied it exhaustively. In tournament play it was more difficult because the players were better read.
