There is a number of narrow-gauge railways in Russia that still operate. I went to the town of Kirovo-Chepetsk to explore one of the well-known narrow-gauge "rapid transit" systems maintained by railway enthusiasts. In 2019, the railway was bought off by an entrepreneur Evgeniy Sterlin who not just saved regular passenger service but also created a railway museum to develop local tourism.
November 2020.

I laughed a little bit when you showed the timetable with the branding as rapid transit system :D I would rather speak of a heritage railway. But huge respect to the people working on the railway keeping it running. Especially the old signal box was impressing to see, what a shame that it isnt completely functional anymore. Hopefully, we can all working together on constructive things like building a better european / Asian train network, than fighting pointless wars against each other.

Vaga Bond your trip was very interesting :). If the green and blue locomotives were not narrow gauge, I would buy them both and take them to Moscow. I would pick up my friends who would flag me down on the Moscow commuter railway, and we would be very trippy driving around the city waving to people.

It always surprises me how much of public transit especially railway in post-soviet countries has been destroyed. In Lithuania there is Aukštaitija narrow gauge railway that now runs just Panevėžys-Anykščiai-Rubikiai But in 1952-1992 (what my grandmother remembers) the narrow gauge railway network was at its peak. The lines ran: Panevėžys-Anykščiai-Utena-Švenčionėliai Šiauliai-Pakruojis-Pasvalys-Biržai Švenčionėliai-Švenčionys-Lentupis(Лынтупы)-...-and then further into Belarus on today existing railway Not a narrow gauge but now is destroyed: Pabradė-Zalavas-Lentupis(Лынтупы)-...-and then further into Belarus on today existing railway Because my grandmother lived in Biržai she remembers the train arriving and leaving at an interval of 1 hour. She used to take that train to Šiauliai and then from Šiauliai to Klaipeda, to go to beach at summers.
@kantarva
@kantarva 2 жыл бұрын
It has not been destroyed. It has been rendered obsolete for the last 60 years. Was max 25 km/h speed and tracks going through nowhere able to compete with buses? You mentioned yourself - EX-soviet. Because in -soviet- countries you either had an obsolete form of transport, or you had nothing. not to mention that it was the -soviet- decision to close the narrow gauge lines or convert them to broad gauge.
@PurpleDuneEfa
@PurpleDuneEfa 2 жыл бұрын
@@kantarva I don't know what kind of country you are from and what kind of experience you/your relatives had with public transportation in Soviet countries, but today's public transportation sucks compared to 40-60 years ago. For example the same route of Šiauliai-Biržai with a train took ~2 hours. Today with the bus it takes more than 3 hours. The original comment is just my grandmother's experience while living in Biržai. Edit: the train reached up to 55km/h so idk where you pulled 25km/h out but it could be with different models though. The train model that was operated according to my grandmother is TU2 or in Russian ТУ2

Thank you for the video and the slice of Russian railway history. It's sad to see such an extensive network abandoned and left to decay. Hopefully one day the locos and wagons will be refurbished and put to use or at least maintained as a museum railway.

Really incredible video. It's a real study of both man and machines. One of the things wrong about the way most people is taught history is that they make it about places and dates. But stories of people and the things they did, bring the story to life in people's imaginations.

Did they use narrow gauge railways because they survive better on permafrost?
@ivantrainsLIVE

Lol, there is no permafrost. Narrow gauge is easier to assemble and disassemble. It allows you to construct branch tracks to new areas there forest/peat is cut/harvested to transfer them.
