I was on the beach in Kauai. This is exactly what the waves were doing. I'm a very strong swimmer. But after feeling the wash-back that tried to suck me back in, I thought, HELL NO! The waves would hit the sand so hard I could feel it through my feet. On the flip side, the local kids were accessing the surf waves about 300ft from the shore carrying a board.

Happened to me as a kid, same situation. I nearly drowned, a super brave guy scooped me when I got washed up a bit farther towards the beach, I’m so impressed he hung on. I still have the scares from being sucked out and repeatedly pummeled into the sharp rocks of the sea floor. It was bad, they were 10-12 footers. Not just in my memory, but the adults and surfers on the beach that day also estimated that wave height. Be careful, the ocean is powerful.

The first time I went surfing. I was seven, spent all winter fixing a board my father got off the side of the road. He’s pushing me into shorebreak, maybe 1-3 ft…Ponta Vedra Beach Florida… Having a great time, about my tenth wave, I got cocky and ate shit. One of the fins cut my ear. My father wrapped his shirt around my head, threw me in the truck and left the Board on the beach. I was pissed. Got 7or 8 stitches. Ditched surfing for guitar for a year. Then I became obsessed with surfing. It’s the best. Fall off the horse you gotta get back up and keep riding
