We are investigating the Iver Huitfeldt-class, one of the most advantageous and cost-effective Western surface combatants. #IverHuitfeldt #frigate #royaldanishnavy
Why has the Royal Danish Navy preferred a highly modular warship design?
What are the features of the Iver Huitfeldt-class?
Why has no other country been interested in the floating Lego concept until now?
What difference will it chance if Indonesia chooses the Huitfeldt-class?

Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books, and they tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyses them, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. While the Second Cold War is rising, Let's investigate the weapons together.

Just a slight correction. The Iver Huitfeldt-class may have lost to the Type 26 Global Combat Ship in Australia and Canada but a modified variant HAS been chosen by the Royal Navy as their Type 31, construction of which has just started in Rosyth. Furthermore this modified variant has also been recently chosen by the Polish Navy; (although the configuration has not been confirmed).

I like these Danish Frigates because of their conceptional flexibility. We see in Ukraine, that tasks can change into the mid range of a conflict. And transforming a frigate to special Danish naval tasks: It makes a difference, if you prepare for lonesome action at the eastcoasts of Greenland in November, or you act shoulder to shoulder with a crowd of allied ships, planes, submarines e.g. somewhere in the Swedish Bouhuslän Summer-Labyrints :) And I always mention the size of radars :) I felt far more safe, when the Danish sent one of their Frigates more easterly into the Baltics, when the russian attacks on Ukraine began... I felt: They would realize every `little game` by the Russians right from the beginning, adding Data to satellite- and Awacs-research for our Nato for precise predictions... I once heard about our actual German Frigate-Generation: When one of them leaves Wilhelmshaven, it got the whole flight-traffic of London as well as Frankfurt on its screens... at the same time :) I am not a naval professional... but this imagination helped me to understand a bit better, what these modern vessels are capable of. Therefore my `ahoi` to our Danish friends: well done, observing the land of the Rus a bit closer... Thank you :)

I helped build these vessel. The 2 propeller shafts made by Thüssen Krupp are made of Duplex steel which is rust free and almost non magnetic due to mines. They are powered by MTU engines. With the advanced misiles of today it’s better to have redundancy in form of more smaller cost effective vessels than few large ones.

The "LEGO"-concept is actually great for keeping uptime at a max. If a containerized system has a malfunction it can be replaced in 60 minutes. The ship then steams back to sea to perform its duties while repairs are being made on land. It's not only weapon systems that can be utilized in the containers also cranes, SigInt/Elint, anti pollution and other functions. I was in the Danish Navy in the early nineties where it was part of standard readiness training to go to a small random port. A truck and a land based mobile crane would show up and we would swap containers as fast as possible.

The aspect that I like about modular systems is that you can swap out a defective or damaged system with a replacement module. . Which basicly means that you can do maintenance on a module on land and within hours of a unit being alongside you can swap out a module that's faulty or requiring deep maintenance ... thus reducing alongside time and likelihood of failure in operation... Also the fact that an absalon frigate can deploy a mexifloat roll an MBT onto it and put this ashore almost anywhere is well beyond the ability of most dedicated amphib ships...

As the Type-31 is based off Iver’s hull, it would be interesting for the comparison to the USN’s upcoming Constellation-class frigate. It’s definitely more stealthy in design compared to the Constellation. It’s faster. Longer operational range. Not as big. Less crew required. Less capacity of aircraft. I believe the Constellation has better armament options (with the ability to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles & Naval Strike Missile).

Through Babcock marketing the Arrowhead 140 concept,of which the Type 31 is related ,there is enough difference in lineage to separate those from the original IH Design.

Because they are better. This is slow and not heavily armed. The low price is because they equipped it with old guns. This ship is good looking but didn't increased Danish navy capabilities.

@MrGoodSpoon
@MrGoodSpoon 2 жыл бұрын
What do you base this on? Yes the cannons are older/smaller caliber but works well for self protection and for anti-air. However it has a larger missile loadout and same speed as the 23, plus more range? Anyway the Type 23 is older, so it’s a bit weird to compare these two classes?

@@MrGoodSpoon type 23 is older but had the same armament as this frigate. Harpoon missiles, ESSM anti air missiles. A cannon, 2 triple torpedo launchers and a not very capable CIWS. The same armament. This frigate looks a lot better but the British one is quite faster, 29 VS 32-34 knots. Even the radar rotating radar it's the same.

It may be because the British always comes out with great designs... Take the new British aircraft carriers as an example. They have put two islands on the carrier. This has many benefits to design change. Now South Korea has designed their own aircraft with two islands and will probably become standard for all new aircraft carrier designs 😀
