Hi, trying to copy Karlovic serve for some time now. You bring up some interesting points. Thanks.

The bent arm at the conclusion of the ball toss increases the upward angle of his shoulders and increases the amount of shoulder over shoulder motion on the forward swing. This translates into increased racket head speed.

Some people say that platform is actually better for serve and volley bc when you land you are more balanced where as with PinPoint one has to take a split second to regain one’s wits. What’s your opinion and why do you use a platform? In this video what stands out to me are how the left hip leads, how far “behind” the racquet arm is. The hip both loads and unloads first, while the arm sort of dangles behind and only catches a hair of a split second before contact. This man turns his body into a giant whip!!

AT, I have never heard of players having to take an additional split step after hitting a pin point serve. This is very interesting to me. I've always used a platform stance, I felt I could explode up and into the ball so much better. I didn't feel comfortable with the pin point stance. Yes, Karlovic does create an amazing "whipping" effect with his serve. Thanks for your comment and support! JF

@@topspintennis I didn't say "take an additional step." I said take an additional fraction of a second to regain balance.

I think Riddick did a similar move with the left arm, not bent as karlovics Good analysis

One thing this serve video demonstrates more clearly than any other that I've seen is that the serve is SIDEWAYS. Ivo's whole body through his shoulders and hips are sideways, his left hip is moving sideways into the court, a line from his right hip through the left points into the court, all the way through contact. It really isn't until after contact that he rotates forward. Many other servers start sideways and are rotating about 45 degrees at contact and end up facing forward. But I think a very common misconception most rec players have is about the body's orientation for the serve.

he puts his left arm over his head to tension (load) the left part of his core, this gives huge snap forward. Roddick does the same

I don’t know how to link the time on the comment but @5:47 when Ivo is fully loaded to “take off” his whole body looks like a bow about to release. Needless to say it looks extremely difficult to serve this way and get into this position ... but I’ll know more tomorrow when I try on the court!

Why don't we do this video from the Serve Code from Congruent Tennis for another perspective on this excellent example? By the way, all your observations were excellent here!

Trying to copy this serve for a long time , but can't sync, the lag.

It can be an issue when trying to time the lag. Keep working at it, it will click eventually! JF

The tossing arm is just naturally for balancing against the forward momentum. When it's released. Kaboom. All forward

Great videos as usual. Do you make the video of you blue on purpose? Do you need help in setting the white balance of your camera, or help in how to to readjust the white balance in your video editing program? I am a video pro and can help you. No charge. If you're doing it in purpose, fine. It you'd like to learn some "magic moves" to fix it. Let me know. Just want to help. Cheers.
