Knowing this, I still bought the tree and a pollenizer Late Santa Rosa plum because I really love Emerald Beauts plums. No. I pruned the tree, due to some instructions I got from the orchard. My Santa Rosa branches grew out well, but my Emerald Beaut branches are pretty stunted. I need to figure out why. No fruit for either of them yet.

Granny Smith comes from Ryde in the Sydney Australia area. This area is classed as sub tropic and would only get to 100 - 200 hours below 7°c (45°f). It rarely gets below freezing (1 night/decade). It is also one of the most sold trees in Australia. I have one growing in northern Queensland (tropical) & I had to remove over 50 fruits, because the tree has been in the ground for less then a year. My chill hours would be 30-40 & very negative if we use the second system. Our day temps in winter are typically 18-25°c (64-77) but they will commonly exceed 30°c (88°f).

@@graceful8980 They are both warmer climate apples (to my knowledge). Most deciduous fruit will flower in tropical regions, they will not set the fruit load as if it was in a cooler climate. But I have had success with apples (3 types), peaches (2 types) & figs (23 types). 2 of the 3 apple types have flowered & set fruit (removed to strengthen grafts). Both peaches have given fruit (only small trees in pots, need to plant out when I get cooler weather). All fig varieties have fruited (unfortunately approx 1/3 of them tend to ripen @ the time of year that I get heavy rainfall, so a little watered down in flavour, but still sweet & nice). My biggest advice is TRY, give them consistent water in your drier periods & fertilize often in small amounts rather then 1-2 times during spring/summer. Because tropical climates DON'T have a true dormancy period, the fertilizer overload can knock them around if done in large amounts.

18:33 you can plant different varieties of apples 24 inches apart which will ripen at different times. Planting tips: always plant on a rise never plant into a depression. Huge advocate of mulching. Fertilizing. Whitewashing helps prevent sun damage and winter stress. Whitewash sold by IV organics. Should whitewash on first day you get plant from a nursery. Manage the size to not have to climb high to pick fruit. In August to October remove the upper growth.

Growing Fuji apples in Orlando, tree is very strong, lots of insect control and some fungus control, we planted about 7 ft away from the house creating some shade at the south west. This year we had the first bloom and apples are around 1.8 inches in diameter with no pruning or special techniques yet, the tree grew very fast and is over 15 ft high in about 4 years, plan to keep around 14 ft high to allow for more sun since it’s between two houses. I hope this helps. Note: I was making fun of my wife for getting an apple tree here.

I checked on DWN's Home Garden catalog page of apples, and two years after this video was posted. the listings for these "high chill" apples remain the same. Why hasn't the information been updated to reflect the findings of this project? Home growers could be encouraged to try so many more varieties if they weren't being led to believe that Arkansas Black "needs" 500-600 chill hours, Red Delicious "needs" 700 chill hours, etc. Does the right hand of DWN not know what the left hand is doing?

Our nearby neighbors had a big one and the new owners didn’t know it was a pear and cut it down. They were understandably bummed when we told them what it was. It was scraggly from neglect and had no leaves at the time.

I did this in Central Fl and they all died in about 3 years and never got any fruit. I think when they say zone 10a (I'm in zone 9b) they don't take in to account the rain and humidity that we get in FL.

Can apple grow in southwest Nigeria? Am experimenting it though. I saw a video where they advise you; 1. Put the seeds in water. 2. Filter out the floating seeds. 3. Soak them in water for 16 to 24hrs. 4. Get a wet tissue paper, arrange the seeds in it, cover it and moisturise the tissue paper very well, keep in fridge. 5. Transfer to soil when you notice it germinating. I did this with 15seeds, only one making attempt but ....... Am starting again with another 15seeds following same process. Can apple grow in a hot weather like Nigeria (south west) where temperature is always between 31 to 37°c? Thanks!!!

Apple seeds won't produce the variety they came from and you probably won't get anything that's any good. It's best to buy a young tree, or do grafts onto rootstocks (not with apples with patents still in effect).

Sorry guys but fall winter Santa Ana winds may not damage things with the cold but the extremely low humidity will suck the life right out of trees and plants watering is a must during these times especially avocados by keeping my avocados hydrated I can keep the leaves on with the winds hittting 60mph in the wind tunnel of my microclimate jurupa valley Southern California
