@@danielaltrui9015 It definitely works, shoots grow out like normal, but will orient themselves correctly as they grow. New growth will be oriented correctly from that point on. It's not the ideal way to do it, but It works for what he's trying to accomplish here.

You mentioned in a previous video on rooting fig cuttings to only use vermiculite and/or perlite to root fig cuttings because soil with organic matter could cause problems. In this video, when you are rooting the cutting for your Mom, it appears that you use straight potting soil from a bag. Hello Randy, CORRECT-- Do Not fertilize until after you up-pot your cuttings to a larger container (or in-ground if you intend to grow them directly into the garden). Also, wait another 1-3 weeks after up-potting before fertilizing. You should transplant your fig cuttings once the roots begin to slightly spiral the bottom of the growing cup/ container (assuming you used a clear container)-- otherwise, wait until the fig cuttings have pushed out at least 3 leaves. Good day, Charles! Very interesting technique, inserting the cutting top down! As you already know, my Hilda's Honey Green cuttings both rooted this spring, and one already has reached more than 5' tall. it is forming figlets. As I don't want it to get much taller, in its pot, is it OK to let it form figs now? Also, I accidentally inserted two cuttings of Sucrette Green upside down. I must have been sleepy when I stuck them. Anyway, I was worried about how they would do, but both are strong and tall already, about 4' tall, and seem to be fine, rooted upside down!

YES- you could allow the tree to support a couple/ few fruit in the first year if you see that the tree has accomplished satisfactory growth & health (as you’ve successfully done). However, if the fruit are not already 1/2+ or larger developed, not sure if you’ll have ripe figs within the limited number of warm weeks left of this year. Regardless- worth the try. Interesting idea! You can also plant a willow tree branch upside down and you will grow a weeping willow tree.

I have been watching your youtube channel. I bought some fig cuttings on Etsy and planted them in pots with a plastic bag over them to prevent drying out. It has been 100 degree in Houston. In 4-5 days, there are a lot roots above the dirt level but NO roots below the dirt level. Please help!

Charles, perhaps you should develop a product for sale: cups made of glass or at least something usable many times like but less likely to break, say, acrylic, OR biodegradable cups from hemp, bamboo, used cotton and wool clothing, or some other soil-healthy fiber or waste. So that they don't biodegrade while in use, the binder could have cinnamon as an ingredient and a plant wax or something, the disposal mechanism requiring nothing more than a dip in vinegar or boiling water or what-not. I'll never do more research, much less develop such a product, so have at it. :)

You didn’t say why you wanted the wishbone or upside down cutting. Is there a reason/advantage or just a cool shape you wanted to try? Have you tried before and do the figs and leaves eventually readjust and grow in a normal direction? Thanks!

Hello Alicia, I just added the following few sentences to the video bio explaining this question: "About 10+ years ago applying this upside-down cutting method to a 3-4 foot long cutting which within 3-4 months grew an additional 6 feet plus supported dozens of quality figs. The logic is that that if each subterranean branch pushed some roots, multiplied by the number of subterranean branches, results in plenty of support for quality figs in the first few months of being planted!" Hi Mr. Malki, I am very new in my gardening journey. Few weeks back, I accidentally did a similar wish-bone fig cutting and roots are growing out from the top (the V-section of the Y - roots dangling in the air) while the I-section of the Y is in the soil. Is that normal?

Hi Charles, you have amazing videos. I have successfully grown some of the cuttings you sent me. I used vermiculite and perlite and cut holes in a white cup( didn’t have clear ones) I then put them in a clear bucket with a locking top. Wow.. they grew. I now have some brown spots on my mission fig leaves. I lose two figs😢. The Old Yeller isn’t growing buds but may be growing roots. How long do I Leave them in the soil combo and know when to plant them in pots. I even got a fig on one of the cuttings. HELP what am I doing . I do have pictures if you need them. GREAT NEWS with successfully rooting the fig cuttings! 100% rooting success is rare-- so congratulations on rooting some of them!! You can up-pott the cuttings once they push at least 3 leaves which should happen within 4-6 weeks. Do not allow those cuttings to remain in the original cup/ containers past 2 months. @@nahnisjourney1406 You should have success growing lemons from seed, but you should know it may be similar & not identical unless propagated by (1) cutting, (2) air layer or (3) grafted. Citrus trees (including cuttings) are highly regulated (due to disease transmission to local citrus orchards) from being shipped- so I’d recommend you try to find someone local that can get you a Meyer lemon cutting. I have a fig volunteer from bird dropping .it is 9' tall, fruit was all dry inside an tasteless . I ask home Depot guy an he said lack of water. Does that sound correct?

It could be a couple of things. My first guess is that it's a Caprifig (male fig that contains the pollen to pollinate a Symrna fig). Caprifigs usually don't produce edible figs and can spread rapidly from birds. Or, I guess it could be a Symrna fig, which is a fig that requires pollination. If it doesn't get pollinated the fruit dries up and falls off. Look for videos of Caprifigs and see if it looks similar to what you have. Water probably isn't the issue.

Hi. I'm Going to take my fig tree out of a mid size clay pot to a 50 gallon half barrel, and I'm planning on using 100% potting soil. Is this ok?.. I'm Always putting my tree in the garage as in Toronto canada it gets cold and the tree is only good to -10C. it seems to be ok in the garage for years now. Will it survive the replant to a barrel?. I was thinking of just pulling the whole bulb out and putting in in the barrel, adding only potting soil for filler. Please let me know if the soil and method is ok. Thank you!!!

Does this method work on roses, in our case (mostly) root stock? I'm slowly but surely cleaning up a large garden neglected for 20 years. There are several surviving roses, some root stock only. I'll keep one or two as they are because frankly they're pretty, too; but I'd like to grow new root stock for grafting other roses that we particularly like.

I accidentally stuck two cuttings of Sucrette Green upside down, last spring, and both are strong young fig trees now, about 4' tall. The sprouts bent up after starting down, but have prospered.

@@IVOrganic I am currently working on some air layering on my Japanese fig tree in my front yard. One branch is about 2" in diameter. I see the roots are looking good inside of a bottle. Also have a 4 gal clothe bag around a 4" diameter trunk. Nice looking roots coming along with that too

I also hav had a love for figs since I was a young child, both my mother and father are Greek Cypriot from Cyprus originally, and I was blessed to enjoy many childhood summers in Cyprus and Greece, and have wonderful memories of picking figs for breakfast with my grandmother. My dear Dad passed away 4.5 yars ago, and a family frind from Dad's village gave me a cutting from his fig here in the UK. It's 3 years in and I just had the first harvest of som divine sublime juicy jam like figs, just amazing! I let all the enrgy go into establishing the roots for the first two years, and it's so wonderful to see it becoming a beautiful little fig tree, though from last year with it being around 3 ft when I re potted it, it is now around 7 to 8 ft, amazing! Seems to like my special mix with pirlite, vermiculite, some sea shells, 2 special organic compost mixes i mixed and seaweed fertiliser : ) My dream is to start air layering and grafting, going to start with my aunty's lovely fig next week. I alos brought back to life and full fig production joy a little dward fig mum and dad planted, it's really happy now : ) My dream is to get to Cyprus this coming year, and to start creating a fruit joy orchard, with figs, olives, citurs, pompegranites and a few favourites : ) Big Thanks for being a great inspiration, and sharing in all these great top tips, super appreciated! no, that upside down method can be done on any plant, but only performed by those who have ignored plant anatomy and the tiny valves in the micro vasculature. In other words plants have one way valves to help surface tension (that powers the circulation) work in times of varying water input. That cutting will now have to expend a lot of energy, re-growing the circulation system, rather than growing new roots. It has been tried many times, but usually a lot of alcohol was involved in the decision making process.

The control plant I had last plant, a cutting from the same tree but rooted the traditional way, rooted and had some fruits which did not have enough time to ripe. I am very curious to see what both plants do this year after a jump start.
