Күн бұрын

I sighted this Woodpecker a little North of Thayer Missouri. He lives near me because this is not the first time I have seen him.
This bird sure looks like an Ivory-Bill, and is much larger then this video allows the bird to appear. But I realize that there will be Specifics that I dont see and/or understand from my footage.
Anyway its a Beautiful bird that lives on my land, here in South East Missouri.
WARNING; My audio is loud in this video so turn down your volume accordingly and hope you wont be startled.

Nice bird, definitely a pileated. I don't know why the logging that brought the ivory-bill to extinction didn't affect the pileated as well. It's my opinion that we will never find that the pileated is not extinct.

At 0:56 you can see its back is solid black - no white "backpack" stripes. (In the profile views you can see white side stripes, but they are under the wings, not on the back.) But don't be discouraged! Keep filming - one day somebody will get lucky, might be you!

Just east of the Palmetto Expressway or 826 and SW 72nd Street in South Miami there is a large patch of undeveloped land maybe 50 acres on the south side of Sunset drive. This is about a half a mile from the Palmetto Expressway that has very old trees that are also rare to our environment. Occasionally from my sisters neighborhood and her back yard that is close we see these Ivory billed Woodpeckers with there distinctive white or ivory colored bills. The land was to be built with new homes but the South Miami Tax payers were able to secure this land and preserve it. We have also seen these large woodpeckers in our back yard on occasion because of the feeders we put out. We have had Painted Buntings and Rose Breasted Grosbeaks in our yard that we have video taped. WE will try to take videos of this Rare woodpecker to authenticate its existence.

@@ozarkfloat Yes, you are welcome. there are many kinds of beautiful woodpecker species that should not be overlooked. You should take a look at the chesnut crested woodpecker. Some people here don't really like birds they're only obsessed with extinction status. They fancy being the one that discovers a surviving indivividual and having all the spotlights on them, even academics are false friends of nature. But you know, those collectors who hunted and killed the ivory woodpecker in the 1920's , 1930's were also obsessed people looking after the same thing being the last one to sight the bird and take possession of that sighting by killing the bird. They are both bad people. These academics could not even name 4 different species of woodpecker but they will obsess about the frequency of wing flapping for just that bird. All these obsessed people searching for the ivory billed woodpecker are in fact enemies of wildlife and of birds. They only want to discover the birds that are extinct and don't even know the live ones.

I don’t live here at this farm house all the time. 3/4s of each month is spent in Kansas City where I do business. I see the difference that you speak of after I read a little research on these birds. Above I spoke of sighting another type of Woodpecker that was all grey and about the size of a small dove. This is all taking place in Southeast Missouri on a farm with cleared land and about 12 Acres of wooded area surrounding a pond near my house. I realize this must not be uncommon but now I have a newly found interest in being aware of the surrounding birds that live near. Thanks for your comment.

I'm sorry but this species is called the Pileated Woodpecker (Hylatomus pileatus). Although very similar to the Ivory-billed, there are subtle differences. For example, the Ivory-billed has red only on its crest, on top of the head. The pileated, as you can see has red stripe on side of its face. also, the Ivory-billed has a large white patch on its wing, this does not. as an ornithologist, I'd love to see one but it's highly unlikely that I ever will. if that bird is still around, it is likely to be extremely rare. still, the pileated is a wonderful sight and is beautiful too. nice video

This Morning I heard a Woodpecker pecking and immediately searched it out and saw that it was a lot smaller then this one in this vid and that it was all brownish/grey. like a grey Dove was pecking. I will look this one up to understand what it could be. Thank for comment.

There are a number of them in the KC area. We used to see them daily along the Blue River inside the zoo (best area was the swinging bridge in the Africa section). Knob Noster State Park usually yields a pair or more each visit. Great birds & never tire seeing or hearing them. Always dream that one day one will be much larger, with a white bill, but sadly, I don't think anyone ever will. It's a Ghost Bird (great movie, a must see!!!).

Yes. Beautiful. And its size with its red head really makes it stand out and made me feel very appreciative that I was able to even see it in real life. I hope very much that this kind of bird is not short in numbers and might become extinct someday. Do you think these birds had a different way of life or area that kept them from dieing out like the Ivory-Bill? They seem so much the same other than a few feathers that were patterned differently. Thank you for your kind comment.

It is a pileated woodpecker... 200 miles North from last sighting?!!! That would be impossible! Ivorybills are non-migratory, from what I know. They only live in one type of forest, which was destroyed by greedy bastards who wanted the timber and land. Those forests were, and maybe still are, around the area, primeval hardwood forests. It's a pity that those birds went extinct.

Back in the 30's there was extensive logging in the swamps for Cypress wood.. there are b/w film footage of loggers standing on little flat boats? and sawing down all the big trees with the knees coming up out of the water. They poisoned the birds and took away their habitat..Also, look into the Imperial Woodpecker which is also thought to be extinct aka The Mexican Ivory-bill The Pileated lives more in the Pine Flats areas and not threatened by heavy logging

Because it didn't taste good, or have uses, it was not protected. The American alligator and certain species of birds like endangered ducks were conserved because hunters took initiative. You have to give good reasons to people to protect animals such as these, because people do not have time. I mean, if you read this, you have wasted time. Go save animals.
