Shoki of Iwami Kagura, Shinto theatrical dance and music dedicated to the deities of Japanese mythology
The Story
Once upon a time, when the Emperor Genso of Tang was ill in bed, he had a dream in which a deity appeared and defeated a demon ogre. When the emperor awoke, he was suddenly healed of the disease. Thus, he summoned a painter to make a portrait of the deity. The long and thick beard, the large eyes glaring at something, the official uniform, and a sword in his hand illustrated that he was Shoki.
Because of this ancient legend, the deity is believed to ward off the deity of disease and eliminate evil spirits in China and in Japan.
