I'm pretty sure the phone is using VO-LTE, hence the dial tone. Also, I have a 4G LTE router that has both Internet & allows you to connect legacy/old landline phones into it and the router has built-in answer machine as well as Vo-IP ability over the 4G network.

I kind of like it, honestly. It'd be good for, like, giving your grandparents so they can have a "home phone" but also video call and such.
@beardsntools

Yeah to answer his conclusion, this would be great if you want to use whatsapp to call your grandma and her experience would be just like using a landline, which she is used to. That said, outside of using whatsapp, a normal landline phone would make more sense. Another use for this would be in rented apartments, where you do not have a landline socket(rj11) but you still want a "landline phone". This thing is basically just a mobile phone, so it needs zero new cables added to work.

I must admit, when I saw the thumbnail, I wondered the point but this would have been great for my Grandfather. He was a retired farmer who never really used technology beyond a remote control A feature phone was a struggle to get use to when he needed to go into care and the place didnt have a land line

In your head it sounds great. My father who is 75 and spent his whole career in computers (from 1972 - retired in 2013) even struggles to understand and want to use these new applications (whats app etc.) . I can try to make him use them. But they will eventually log him out and then want some sort of 2FA to get back in. You will get a normal call from them to say that its not working. lol I can only imagine trying to get a person that never used technology, to use one. you would have to write step by step instructions for them to follow, with a FAQ section and tech support line.

I know old people who live in the country with wall phones and no cell and this would be great for them when the power is out, Last time the power went out they could not call because there phone had no power, So this at least has a battery so they can still call us for help, If this was like $50 Id get it and maybe get one for myself as well just because it look's like a real home phone, I have a old school dial phone on the table just for looks next to my 1940s sewing machine and typewriter, ... Keeping the past alive lol

That's the thing, though. This is just a cell mobile device in what looks like a deskphone case. You need cell service to use it and it doesn't work with landlines. So it would actually do nothing for the problem you describe.

I bought an Anko (Kmart Australia/NZ) smart kettle (because it was the cheapest kettle with multiple temperature options at the time), and it also uses Tuya. From what I can gather, it seems like common software for cheaper home automation products.

the market is senior citizens in a hospital or long term care home. i used something similar for my elderly in laws when they had to go into a care home. the home wanted to charge about $ 50 per month for a phone on their system plus all incoming calls would go through their voice switch board. . i install this system , transferred their old house phone number to a sim card. and for only the cost of the phone and the cheapest plan available ( about $ 20 monthly ) their friend s could call them as usual and they understood how to make calls. even near their end . they both could still work a Old Fashion Phone. . big buttons are great for trembling fingers.

In the UK with the digital landline switchover if there's a power cut or loss of broadband the landline is lost. One major provider Virgin Media gives a back up landline phone that contains an O2 network sim if a customers is vulnerable. Not sure it's amazing as your one though! Loving the Photoshop pictures, great commentary haha. After watching it in use, I really want one to take with me to just use in a coffee shop or on the beach or something 🤣

My grandmother has a phone that looks similar-ish to this one in that it has the screen on top and large buttons. Hers has some proprietary system that puts up a transcription of the conversation to help her follow the call on the screen (speech to text). It transcribes with just a bit too much of a delay and doesn't guess what you are saying all to well so although it helps some, it is still a pain to deal with. Maybe there is a better company out there somewhere idk. The one she has was picked by her health insurance company I think.

Where this phone works great is care homes. Most provide cable TV but not phone (or internet). For basic phone cellular is the cheapest. On top of the cost, when a persons mind starts to go, using even a normal non-smart phone can be tricky. A handset with big buttons really is the best, though it would have been nice if this had favorite/speed dial buttons as that’s really the best. When my grandma was at a care home I used a cellular to landline converter with a landline phone but this is a nicer/all in one package.

10:00 as somebody who currently has a rotary dial car phone, well hands-free I don't really want to find out. but they can't argue I'm texting while driving because that's well totally impossible.... I'm using an XLink Bluetooth Gateway, I also have one at home so all my home phones ring to my cell phone. I set up the car phone as a gag/easily removable device for demonstration. I also got totally annoyed with the built-in Bluetooth in the car always overriding my music or podcast cutting things off and the slightly updated voice dialing just plain didn't work it was five steps before it would actually dial because it's not using the built-in cell phone voice dialing which only slightly works better. I pick up the rotary phone and hook flash and depending whether Siri wants to talk to me I can usually make a fairly undistracted call, answering is so much easier. I also had a AT&T home phone box with built-in battery I just plug in a corded phone and tried that for a while it's kind of fun other than AT&T never canceled our service and tried to double or triple charge when we changed carriers.

Funny I was just checking for a new video last night, must have been barely too early! Also, I remember being in the live stream for this. It is surprisingly hard to find smart home phones, and I always wondered why. We have smart everything else - fridge, toaster, stove, shower... Phones actually make the most sense! So I'm very interested in this review even though it's likely shoddy Chinese garbage. I'd like to see a reputable phone company take a stab at it, though.

In the USA, a telephone jack in the wall carries enough power to operate a wired telephone even during a total power loss to the house. This also means that it might not be safe to operate a wired telephone during a lightening storm. I believe newer homes no longer include a wired phone jack in the walls or kitchen after the mass adoption of mobile phones. But they can be installed by service providers for customers who must use a hardwired phone for various reasons where reliability and security are paramount.

No landline jack? Sigh. My workplace has a Nortel Meridian PBX and we sometimes have to call places that expect the caller to be on mobile. So they want to send us text messages and links to click and I have to explain it's a wall phone that doesn't DO any of those things. It's just a phone. A landline-plugable POTS phone that CAN do SMS would be amazing and useful. And this one can't. Yes I know a PBX can't use POTS devices. We have the adapters for that.

(15:31) I presume that's installed because a lot of cheap off-brand smart home devices use Tuya IoT Platform and that's one of the apps to control those devices, and the manufacturer probably expected the user to have some of those devices. Most of the other apps, including Browser, Clock, and Search, all appear to all be old AOSP apps left over in AOSP builds of Android. If I recall correctly, development of those stopped after various Android versions over the years as each of them were replaced with Google Nexus/Pixel and/or device manufacturer UX apps on GMS certified devices. For example, Search was replaced with the full Google app, Browser was replaced with Google Chrome, Calendar was replaced with Google Calendar, Email was replaced with Gmail (when it gained the ability to access non-Gmail e-mail accounts), then Phone, Messaging, Calculator, Clock, and Sound Recorder were all replaced with equivalent Google Pixel apps that would then be replaced by some device manufacturers in their UXs.

Not a bad device. The idea is good, and the execution is decent. If the handset was wireless bluetooth, it would be better. But maybe the higher end model has that. Either way, it's easy enough to use for people that can't figure out smartphones, at least for basic functionality. I could imagine people being gifted this by their children or grandchildren and getting quite a lot of use out of it. The camera seems useless, and the battery is too small. They could've left out the camera and put a bigger battery instead and sold it for the same price. But realistically the battery will almost never be needed so no biggie. It is a little expensive though.
