I am from Germany and I think for an European the second Quiz is kinda easy. For example, if you set up a new phone, often there are most of the european languages to chose for you including the names of the countries in there own language. Another one, if you buy something with a manual, often the manual is in many, if not all the european languages and usually first thing is the name of country in there own language. By the way, you did well in the first quiz, without outlines its kinda hard:P

You're not doing bad at all! I think most people do these the school way - start with the questions you know the answer to and then go back to those you don't know. Especially with the language quizz, it would eliminate those you recognise from the possible options and make it much easier for you to guess the remaining.

That one was unironically good, especially considering the microstate situation was genuinely badly implemented. The states of former Austria-Hungary and Yugoslavia can be quite confusing, but I feel like as soon as you have a central state to orientate yourself it gets a lot easier. Edit: Second one was less impressive, lol. I guess you do recognize a ton more of those if you are European. Suomi for Finland or Hellas for Greece are well known. Cyprus makes more sense if you know about Kyprus -> Copper, Österreich is quite obvious a German word so the options are limited, Sverige sounds pretty much like the English word? For Hungary you'd have to know that the name of the ethnicity is "Magyars".

I managed 74% of the first one (with 5+ minutes left, I just didn't get the others). Full disclosure: I did it after watching you, so that helped me get the bearings regarding smaller countries (not the dots). And it somehow counted Lithuania as wrong, even though I clicked correctly (maybe too close to the border, I don't know). I agree with you that at least the dots should have had some leeway. The result also depends on the order of the countries, which is random. Because it's easier to point to other countries correctly when you already see the big ones. Regarding the second quiz: this one I did in under 1 minute with 100% accuracy, but I need to mention two things here. First, me knowing latin and cyrillic alphabets (and knowing how the greek alphabet looks like; btw. Greece is natively called "Ellada", maybe you've heard that) helped in some cases. Second, I suppose the education in Europe is also more Europe-centric (suprise!). But you should've learned something about Ancient Greece in school, no? 😁

What makes finding Cyprus and Greece easy is math and maybe a little bit of history. Since they both use Greek letters the one whit two lambdas must be Hellas, that is Greece and the other with the pi and rho is Cyprus. I tried the Europe with no outlines and aced it in just over 3 minutes by skipping past the difficult little ones like Andorra, Luxembourg, Monaco and a couple of the Balkans that I was less sure about and coming back to them when I'd got the surrounding countries. Like for example, finding Andorra without borders is almost pure luck, but if you've already identified France and Spain then Andorra becomes easy. I'm going to try it with US states now. [snip] 82% on US states in 5 minutes. I got Vermont and New Hampshire the wrong way round, which I always do, hit Rhode Island while aiming for Connecticut, and had a couple of other near misses. Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada I missed because I got cocky, ignored my own advice, and didn't skip them to come back after I'd got a neighbouring state. Even so, I'm pleased with 82% given I've only been to 5 US states and one of those was only for a connecting flight.

Oh, and a bit help for Hungary - Magyarország. We call ourselves magyar (singular form), and the ország means country. So it is "Hungarian country". Why "magyar"? Seven tribes invaded the Carpathian basin around 895. The biggest, most influential which gave the leaders was called megyer, or magyar. One of the explanations why others call us Hungarians is coming from the "on-ogurs" - "ten arrows" which is the seven Hungarian and the three Bulgarian tribes living together earlier in Asia. Actually no one knows for sure why you guys call us Hungarians :D

We were also called "turks", but apart from living next to them for a while, borrowing some words from them (and much later occupied by them), we are no Turkish either. In ending phase of preliminary schools or was it early high schoold in Poland it was sometimes done during geography test when teacher invited to maindesk for knowledge test - with only difference the map was black. You had to point countries, cities, rivers, mountains, uplands, lowlands etc. I remember learning it for Europe part and it wasn't easy.

Well done! I'm German, and would have had to make wild guesses at which countries belonged to former Yugoslavia -- or the ones in eastern central Europe! (I would've aced the second map, though -- because I can read both the Cyrillic and Greek alphabets, and have been to Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece. Unfair advantage, I know.) 😎

Oh, the blind map challenge! We did this in school in Hungary (high school and primary). We had to put the countries in Europe, Asia, America (North, Middle and South), and the capitals, and we also got grades for that. Oh, those dreaded geography classes! :D I wish we had learnt less lexical data and more critical thinking.

Reminds me of 5th or 6th grade geography...Teacher handed out blank papers, told us to draw Europe with countries, capitals, 10 rivers and the city where our school was and graded that at the end... On the one hand laziest teacher ever to not even print something, on the other hand really makes you realize where the limits of your knowledge are...

You can turn off the timer so you have unlimited time and then skip countries inland to get the costal ones that are easier to pinpoint. Like you get Germany then click through until you get Austria then Czechia is easy. My daughter did each of these continents untill she could get all countries. She was about 12 years old at the time!

Hi Ian, the key to the man one is the next button. You should skip to the big ones around the coast and then fill in the blanks. It's not just Europeans that know the names of the European countries in their own language. I am Aussie and got 100%.

italian here, i tried the second one and got 100% win 1.26 remaining, but as there is a 'skip' option it gets a little bit easier, so you clear quickly the easy ones first and you have less options for the less intuitives/known ("hint" that can be applied to the first one too, maybe even with more gain as it is visual)

13:50 Sweden (Sweden) is a name from the Viking Age. In the Viking Age there were four dominant kingdoms. Danner, Götar, Nordmen, and Svear. In what would become Sverige there was Svea-rike and Göta-rike. The kingdom that had the most power was Svea Rike. According to legend, the Svear crushed the Götarna and then the kingdom "Svitjod" was formed. If you translate Svitjod, it becomes Svea Rike. Later Svearike is referred to as Sverige. Sverige therefore means Svea Rike. Mark = Ground the Scandinavian languages. Danner plus mark = Danmark.

The way I remember the Baltic countries is a little memory trick. I always say Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. That's how they countries are on the map from north to south. Also Sverige comes from Svea Rike or realm of the Svea which was one of the dominant tribes in Sweden in ancient times. They lived in an area that surrounds modern day Stockholm. As a funny aside, the other large realm was Göta Rike or in English realm of the Goths, which is why Sweden's second largest city is called Gothenburg or fortress of the Goths. Relations with the Goths that sacked Rome unclear but possible.

You did pretty well on the first one. The hitboxes aren't precise and the microstates make it hard. You "only" got 53%, but if you hadn't run out of time you'd probably be closer to the average. And keep in mind that this type of website is mostly used by geography nerds... So getting an average score is pretty good. You definitely did better than the majority of Americans, and even a good amount of Europeans, I'd reckon ;) One more tip, for both of those quizzes you had the option to skip countries (and then come back to them later), that might have made it easier.

It would help to know some details of the countries to know where they are. For example, Serbia claims Kosovo as part of them, and they are full of ethnic Albanians, so you could make a guess that Kosovo borders both Serbia and Albania. History and language helps too, with knowledge of Polish-Lithuanian Commenwealth helping to know that Lithuania borders Poland, while knowing that Estonian is very closely related to Finnish helps in knowing that they are very close, so by process of elimination, the last Baltic country, Latvia, is in between the 2.

One of my schoolmates had a bad marks on geography. The teacher wanted him promoted to the next grade and tried to help him. She hanged huge map of Africa with big bold sign above saying "AFRICA" and asked him - - Show me where Africa is on this map. He stood five minutes with blank and confused face starring thoughtlessly at the map. Then he tried to look behind the map... Our teatcher lost her temper, grabbed with one hand his collar and circling his right hand over the continent shouting loudly - - This is Africa! This is Africa! Repeat!!! When he finally whispered "this is Africa", she sighed and said - - You may sit down. You passed...

Hungary is a very difficult one unless you know a little about the history of the country. Hungarians (like many in Europe) are descendants from nomadic steppe people. Hungarians specifically are descended from the Magyars, who settled/conquered Pannonia from the Bulgarians under the leadership of the great Álmos Arpad. His son King (and saint) Steven is the one who converted the burgeoning nation to Catholicism (forever putting them at odds with the Orthodox Bulgaria). The rest of Europe knows them as Hungarians rather than Magyars because at the time Europeans called all Near Eastern steppe nomads “Hunni”, a semi-derogatory generalisation based on the most infamous steppe cultures of recent memory, the Huns. Budapest itself is also incredibly close the Attila’s former capital, further strengthening the “Hunni” association. For further and more in depth enjoyment of this kind of history please visit the nations in question. Also do what I did and read “Empires of the Steppes” by Kenneth Harl. *edit a poorly constructed sentence.

Just a little bit of corrections. We are not descended from the Magyars, we are Magyars. :) Álmos was Árpád's father, who never reached the Carpathian basin (he was probably sacrificed). It was all around 895, while Szent István (or St Steven) was crowned in 1000, more than 100 years later. He was a descendant but not a son. You are right, it was him to converted the Hungarians to Catholicism.

That one with names of EU countries in their own languages was understandably pretty hard for you, but for someone who lives in Europe it was pretty easy so I think that average 87% tracks. I think there was only 1 or 2 I wasn't sure about. Suomi is Finland, that one is pretty well known, I think I knew this one in elementary school, because they always had it written on their hockey jerseys and my dad would expalin what it meant. Europeans know that Hungarians are the Magyars, in fact I believe English is the odd one out, no idea where "Hungary" came from. You can recognize Greek script because it does not look like anything else and only few countries that use cyrilic are in EU, so you can mostly guess by their lenght. Éire is Ireland, heard that one before.

Scandinavian countries are easy to remember Norway is the Northest, Sweden is the Southest, Finland borders Russia. Baltic countries are easy too, in alphabetical order from North to South: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Balcanic countries are a little bit harder. North Macedonia is easy, just remember that Macedonia is a Greek region. Serbia is landlocked. Albania is at a shot of rifle from Southern Italy. Croatia is recognizable from the Istrian peninsula. Slovenia borders Italy. What remains is Montenegro (borders with sea) and Kosovo (landlocked).

Did hat same Quiz before you started it and I am pretty confident in my knowledge of European countries. But it's very dependendant on luck regarding the which countries come up first. I got San Marino and Vatican City before Italy and Andorra and Monaco before France. My first one was Luxemburg. None of these are reasonable to get right, when you have not done the big neighbor first and can see which exact pixels you have to click. I got 81% at 4:32, but the real strategy is to skip anything small first and do big countries and coastlines first and once you have those, just click pixel on the other side of the border for the small ones. 100% in 3rd try. But only with skipping small countries first.
