Sure. However, in the USA you may encounter many, many German names, because of their ancestry - yet they are absolutely American. 😊An example for Schulz is Charles M. Schulz, the creator of Snoopy. It gets weird, though, when names are German, but clearly got invented or altered during the immigration process, for example "Fenstersheib" - seems like someone did not speak any English when coming to America. 😆

@teo_heel10 күн бұрын
You know what's EVEN MORE weird about Lou? One of his inspirations in music was an american jazz singer turned Eurodance sensation Scatman John (John Paul Larkin) who was famous in Germany in late 1990s and some of his last songs were radio hits in Germany before Scatman passed away it December of 1999. Lou actually wanted to perform with John but it never happened because Lou became a star when John already had serious health issues. In 2019 he released a song called "Scatman & Hatman" that was a tribute to Scatman and John's widow Judy worked on it with Lou, she gave the permission to use Scatman's vocals.

The beauty of music is that it's a universal language, you don't necessarily have to understand the lyrics to feel something from it :) I had to learn French for 5 years back in school as a third language (We have German of course as the first, then in 5th grade came English, in 7th grade we had to choose between French and Latin and in 10th grade it was optional to take Spanish (I don't know how much they changed it nowadays)) but I forgot almost everything by now, but I still regularly have the album Contraires by the French band Mypollux running in the background. And I never learned Spanish or Japanese but there are quite a few artists I really like and as a metalhead I also found a lot of amazing folk metal bands that sing in Hungarian, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish and what not^^ now that I think about it, counting by artists, the music with lyrics I understand makes up maybe only about 30% of what I'm listening to

And then you have more 'internet famous' people in german communities. Anica Russo with 'Once Upon A Dream' - her participation to qualify for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, she has a unique enchanting voice. Julien Bam has some great songs, he is more of a film maker and his series has long outdone any Netflix quality and they always feature several german youtuber, streamer, etc AND at least one song. He has this son 'Opus Dens - Die Zahnfee' (a spin off about the tooth fairy, one of the key figures in his stories, played him) and the song feature is Georgia Cavallo, also an incredible german vocalist. His latest song about the Sandmann (another key figure in his stories, played by him, no MV release yet, only in the full video) named 'Fieberflow' features a female gaming streamer called 'Maluna' who is screaming 'i'm a singer' but she never got any training and only occationally sings in her live streams for fun. Among gaming live streamers there are Lara Loft (Lara Trautmann) who is a professional voice actress, a twitch gaming streamer and a very talented vocalist, which she showcases in her voice acting roles and her live streams. And lastly we have SukiDingels, a german Vtuber who also mainly plays games, but sometimes sings and her voice is incredibly lovely but her voice fries and growls (metal style) are totally on point.

Don't worry. Even on German radio there are almost only English songs. You sometimes hear old people complain about that.

And they're mostly crappy forgettable pop songs as well. Good music from Germany is rarely found on German radio.

Uuuu, good ones, I'll look for full versions(i recognize several artists from way before). Not sure if it's still around, bravo hits had bunch of mixed german and other artists on periodic cd's I used to buy back in the days(mid '00s to 2012), so dj ötzi and fantastischen vier I recognize. Speaking of viral spanish songs, take a listen to the german parody/cover version of the asseje/ketchup song(it's hilarious), cover in question is called "steuersong"(tax song) performed by gerd show(puppet version of former german chancellor gerhard schröder). If you wish to have a taste of balkans, you can't go wrong with balkanika music television(tho beware, their yt channel might not be up to date, and the dreaded turbo-folk lurks in the bosnia-herzegovina and serbia portions to lesser extent). Popular songs by croatian artists perhaps would be the safest bet.

In a list of German songs, I always expect "Du", "Verdammt ich liebe dich", "Ein bisschen frieden" (Germany's 1st Eurovision winner) and "99 luftballons", which were missing here. And "How much is the fish" by Scooter. We saw Modern Talking, and "Satellite" (aka Germany's 2nd Eurovision winner) by Lena

Modern Talking was soooo huge in the 80's! They are still poüilar and well known in east europe and russia! The producer Dieter Bohlen (he's the blond guy) is still one of the biggest producers in Germany. He's like Simon Cowell. Lou Bega nowadays is producing music still in the backround for so many artists. And please do not underestimate Stefan Raab. He brought us the 2nd trophy in 2010 in the ESC (European Singing Contest) with Lena Mayer-Landruth and Satellite! kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3vbfGewpsZ6qa8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/baGvaqmapbippLs

Great to hear the interest in more than just American music. One of my favorite bands from Germany is Münchener Freiheit. They mainly sing in German but they did have an English hit in the 80ies I believe. Being from Belgium I recommand listening to Stromae (in French, very popular even in the States), Angèle (she sang Nightcall with Phoenix & Kavinsky at the closing ceremony at the Olympics in Paris, but she sings mainly in French), Loïc Nottet (phenominal voice, his last album was in French but his previous albums were in English - listen to his live cover of Chandelier from Sia - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIvHnauYaryGe7M - or Million eyes - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGmon31_ia1ga7M). For the Dutch speaking part of Belgium I recommend Bazart, Camille, Pommelien Thijs, Metejoor, Gorki (all of these sing in Dutch), Hooverphonic, Oscar and the Wolf, The Starlings, Lost Frequencies. But I would really recommend you have a look at the yearly returning Eurovision Song Contest. It's a song contest that started in 1956 and is still going on to this day. It started really very minimalistic with just 7 European countries participating with a very static podium with singers singing in their own language and an orchestra. Today it is more of a hugh spectacle with all kinds of effects, dancing, singing and the songs can be in any language. The songs can be serious but also hilarious and funky, it is now taking place over 3 days (2 semi-finals and a final) and around 40 countries take part (since 10 years Australia is participating as they were/are huge fans of Eurovision). The only thing that is still the same as in 1956 is that the songs have to be original. To have a taste of what it is, have look and comment to the following funny explanations: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWW1iYyVZ7ehmKc or kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5jdc6qtq9Npm7s.

Okayish selection. Might be biased as my days listening to pop/single charts were in the early 2000s and I'm now more into medieval/folk rock and metal. But if one wants to get a more diverse look at music in Germany the album charts are way more interesting. There you really get the full depth of what people in Germany listen to. From audio plays like the Die drei ??? (The Three Investigators) over classical music, soundtracks/scores, Volksmusik, Schlager, Pop, Elctronic, Dance, Rock, Metal you find it all. Just take the Scorpions. Here in Germany they are mostly known for their rock ballads and only a few of their regular rock songs. They are more successful and known as Hardrock band outside of Germany. A lot of Germans know of Wacken as this big metal festival (I would love to say most people in Germany know of Wacken but even with there often being reports troughout most media about it I quite frequently meet people who aren't aware of it or how big it is) but the German metal bands often get forgotten. Bands like Warlock (Doro Pesch), Accept, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Kreator, Sodom... or newer bands like Saltatio Mortis, Feuerschwanz, Powerwolf, Electric Callboy...

If you are looking for popular songs with German lyrics, I would recommend this one. The band "Unheilig" broke up in 2016. The band's singer, "Der Graf," announced that he wanted to disband the group and focus more on his family. He explained that he could devote too little time to them and wanted to give back some of the happiness he had received through his music. This video shows the performance of "Geboren um zu leben," by far the most popular song of "Unheilig," at their farewell concert. The lyrics are important for the success of this song. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJespYCweJKGnbs
@to_loww12 күн бұрын
It's funny because Unheilig is often referred to as "Gothic Schlager". And assigning someone to the Schlager genre is probably the most insulting thing you can do to a musician.
@computatorium12 күн бұрын
That was only the last few albums. The early albums were Neue Deutsche Härte (NDH) so more comparable to bands like Oomph, Rammstein, Megaherz and Eisbrecher. But it is like it always is if a band tends to change their style and gets from any genre to much in a more pop-like/mainstream suitable direction you find lots of such comments. They changed labels with the album Große Freiheit, there was also personal stuff going on and with it came the change in music style. Sure there were still some songs NDH songs on that album but all in all it was a huge departure from their earlier work. But it was sucessful no one can deny that. but going from a niche music scene to a more mainstream always brings out the haters.
