I thought I was crazy for experiencing the "second listener" effect. Simply by showing your work to another person will change how YOU hear it. Mistakes you never heard will jump out. LOL it's crazy.
@LokuaSound5 жыл бұрын
I thought i was crazy too, it's kind of amazing. Also when you're collaborate you often here the same thing at the same time with your partner if you're well connected.

It's so true. I'll make pages of mix notes before I play the mix back for the client and as soon as I hit play for them, I'm making pages more.

I'm on the autism spectrum (very low level) and some how I feel like it helps. I think very matter of factly apparently, and it always allows me to be very objective. Oh, also loads of self-consciousness helps one listen through someone else's ears because you're always self critical anyway, LOL

This is so true

It doesn't work for me as well. I'm the one that usually points out things no one else can hear. It would be nice to find someone that hears like me. Every time I point out mistakes people are like I didn't even notice that but to my ears, it's usually noticeable.
@proverbalizer5 жыл бұрын
13:50, this is 100% true, that sort of "hearing vicariously" through someone else's ears is something I've definitely noticed before

As a musician, it works exactly the same way: you practice and practice a piece until it's perfect. The moment you play it for someone else, you realize about obvious things that you were missing.

I absolutely agree with the tip of bringing in another person to listen to the mix. I don't know why, but when someone new is listening you become hyper-aware of all of the sounds...and issues magically present themselves.

To me recording is like drawing a 2d square. Mixing is like taking the 2d square and adding the dimensions to make it a cube. Mastering is then taking the image of the cube adding shading and color in the right places and amounts to the point where you'd think you could literally grab the image the cube off the paper on your desk

This video is spot on! 👌 I love that thing you said about inviting someone in to listen. I like to get up and go to the other room and listen thru the wall, especially with little tweaks I get stuck on. Something about hearing not from that first reflection point has always helped me figure things out. I've always been more of a mixer but do some mastering, it's def a different job!

Thanks for this video. Excellent information. Y'all are incredible. The video mentions measuring decibel levels aiming for 85 during reference track playlist playback. The suggestion is to use the cell phone app meters to measure the level from speakers. But the video also discusses mastering with headphones. What are some good ways to measure the decibel level when mastering with headphones?

I suspect that the logic behind the "wierd idea" of having someone else in the room and suddenly hearing things that could be better that you didn't hear before has to with added pressure to your self confidence. Like you're more critical of yourself when you feel that someone else is possibly judging you. Although I think that only works on certain people who care about what others think and become more aware of their own mistakes that way while someone else might be very critical of themselves already and others might be too confident to the point of overconfidence regardless. But I think it's worth trying out to see if it works because even if you think others opinion don't sway your own we're not always correct about ourselves.
