The part where he tells to emotionally detach yourself from your music in order to get an even better mix is true and i have a great little tip: play your music where you normally produce/write it, but instead of looking at your screen, reverse your chair. Keep your eyes open, look at whatever there is to look at, but make sure you are 180 degrees opposite to how you would usually listen. Notice how this effect makes you experience your own music in a totally new and fresh way. Works great if you are in need of a fresh perspective. And yes, you could also bounce it down and listen on earbuds wherever you are, but i do find that this offers less focus and immediacy. Good luck to everyone!

The concept of going from pure music lover to engineer, then back to remembering the pure music lover role (but with the know-how)... that is what my gut has been trying to tell me for years now. So, I now know it's ok to go there. I thank you so much for that nugget!

The approach of trying to communicate the song as a story is very good. Then you know why you’re doing what you’re doing in sections of the mix. Enrique demonstrated this so well. 👍🏻

No doubt. While I don't agree 100% with some of the effects and volume on some parts of the vocals (and that could be simply because I'm listening on a phone), the changes he made with the drums--esp the SNARE!--are totally badass.

This is a fantastic series. Thank you guys for doing it. Regarding mixing drums from the player's perspective: I find that a bit disconcerting when listening to music... or mixing it, because I mentally picture sitting in front of the band as they play. Hearing tom fills go the "wrong way", or hat on the "wrong" side is distracting to me. I guess it's a personal preference, but that's my take on it. Also, very cool shirt, Jonathan! :)

Solid breakdown, but when it comes to choosing reference tracks, what are people's thoughts about choosing a song in a similar key? For instance, if you pick a song that has a great mix, but it's in a completely different key, its total sum of frequencies may be overall shifted more left or right on the Tonal Balance curve due to where the fundamental bass and overall harmonics of that scale/key throughout. This matters less on the high end than the low end in my opinion, but do you think picking a song in a similar key as your reference helps you to make better decisions as where to tonally shape your song?

Am I the only one who felt like the drums sounded really bad in the final mix? I agree with most of the other choices (the work on the vocals is fantastic), but the drums are too loud and distorted for the song. I can see really compressing them in sections--like Shure Level-loc nasty compression--but this sounds almost cheap.
