Izzy at the start of "Seveneves"
Just some short clips based on scenes from the novel "Seveneves" by Neal Stephenson (2015)
Update: didn't realise I misspelled the author's name in the title graphic, my bad, sorry Neal!

Thx for the virtual ride. I hadn't realized that Anathema was so darn big. The vid brings Issey to life.

Thanks Jamie, glad you enjoyed! I recently uploaded part-2 here, if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYa1lXWDoNWebNU I gotta say, I *really* enjoyed browsing your website! All those beautiful vintage illustrations and photos of the China Clipper were just fascinating. There's definitely something about that golden age of trans-Pacific flight that's romantic and appealing!

Great stuff! After many nights visualizing Izzy in orbit it's nice to find this animation, i kinda imagined Amalathea being smaller than that. How about the Endurance being created from the Ymir ice?
@fragomatik
@fragomatik 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gerard, so glad you enjoyed! I based the relative size of Amalthea on the illustrations within the hard-cover version of the novel, as seen here: motherboard-images.vice.com/content-images/contentimage/23911/1437665027226220.png Ah yes, "The Endurance" would make a good subject! Maybe at some later stage I might give it a shot... In the meantime, you may like these additional Seveneves clips, here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYa1lXWDoNWebNU

Just posting here on the most recent video. I read this book as well and love the visualizations. I am curious about a series of visualizations showing phases of future human space development? For example Topic 1:Show how large fully reusable rockets enable lunar settlement, and asteroid mining, specific surface settlements with 3d printed ISRU domes/sphere, then moving into lunar caves sealed with the same isru regolith pressurized and acclimatized, then building a lunar space elevator to ship large bricks of sintered regolith to space to build large scale space colonies.
@kingfisherb90
@kingfisherb90 4 жыл бұрын
Topic 2 would be showing a progression from a Bernal sphere made of sintered regolith bricks, could grow to a Standford Torus made of rings the same circumference as the sphere, and finally an O'Neil Cylinder made of rings the same circumference as the Torus.
@kingfisherb90
@kingfisherb90 4 жыл бұрын
Topic 3 would show how large scale earth industrial processes could be duplicated inside these space colonies, which would allow the construction of an orbital ring and elevator system made of space mined and created materials. Thus freeing humanity from the need to use rockets to access space.
@kingfisherb90
@kingfisherb90 4 жыл бұрын
Topic 4 would be about using the Orbital Ring/s to send large amounts of machinery/material etc to Mercury to being the process of building mass produced Solar Staties to capture the suns power and beam it back to the mercury facility to increase production. The end result being a partial to full Dyson Swarm capable of powering giant lasers needed to push interstellar ships out of the solar system at a % of light speed.

Thanks so much for the interesting post! What you've outlined is humanity's progression from current capabilities to (essentially) a Type-II civilisation on the Kardashev scale. My feeling is that this sequence is pretty-much what we'd want to achieve as a space-faring species! Obviously there are many, many steps with many, many non-trivial challenges along the way - technological, political, and economical - but there's nothing inherently unachievable about what you've described. From a creative point of view, to illustrate such a sequence (and to do it justice) represents a major undertaking, which would entail much effort and time 😉. It occurs to me that there are probably visualisations/illustrations and/or videos already existing, available from various sources, addressing most of the topics you've listed. I suppose that one could conceivably compile quite a comprehensive video on the subject using such available material.

Amalthea has a moon, what happened to it?
@fragomatik
@fragomatik 4 жыл бұрын
The object "Amalthea" in the novel Seveneves, is a *fictional* near-earth Arjuna asteroid. It is not the same as the asteroid belt binary object "113 AMALTHEA", which I believe you are referring to. It's also not the same object as the real-life Jovian moon "Amalthea" (aka Jupiter V).
@дроу

@@fragomatik ok, but its just kinda confusing. We already have 2 real objects in solar system with that name, and he named some third imaginary object that name too.
