Anyone who has ever seen an full sized CV aircraft carrier will probably know just how huge they are are. The CV 16 Liaoning is actually designated as a training ship with combat capability and even though it officially dates from the 1980's it was never fully built by the Soviets. Just 65% of the ship was actually built when the Chinese bought it. The only navy that has ever operated the CV 16 is the Chinese navy, so it is not technically second hand like some people like to claim, and because the majority of the machinery and the power generation systems, communications and radars and sonars and weapons are all different to the earlier Soviet versions its more modern than the Soviet/Russian ships. I mentioned that the physical size and complexity of a 65,000 ton and 1050 feet long warship is amazing, they are taller than 20+ storey buildings and have up to 2000 crewmembers to accommodate and 30-50 multi million dollar aircraft to operate. The ship yards that are able to build aircraft carriers are vast and because of the the production costs and complexity of such ships is such an important project to begin, especially for a country that has never operated or designed or built a carrier the most sensible approach would be to acquire decommissioned carriers officially as scrap metal or as tourist attractions but to allow the chinese naval engineers to study them. In fact Chinese companies bought the ex Australian carrier HMAS Melbourne, the ex Soviet Kiev and the ex Soviet Minsk but were probably bought to provide genuine carriers to be used for research and studying before being scrapped or used for the reasons they were supposed to have been bought for. The success of the Chinese approach to carrier construction and operations is seen in how quickly the first Chinese built carrier was completed and by the fact that the Chinese are also building at least one CV carrier with at least one more ordered (002 class) and also has at least two LSH helicopter carriers being built at the same time. For a country to be able to build its first carrier in record time and then start to build two completely new designs of carriers (4+ seperate vessels being constructed simultaneously for a navy that has only been operating carriers since 2012 and has only built one previous carrier..) That is how a country should progress, in careful stages, and when the experience has been acquired very rapid progress can then begin. In 2010, the PLA Navy had no aircraft carriers, by 2025 they will have around 4 modern CV carriers and 3 LSH helicopter carriers, so to go from zero flat decks to around 7 modern very large vessels in about 15 years is a very impressive accomplishment by any ones standards.

@James Lum just as the Chinese GDP has grown to surpass every other country except for the US, the PLA Navy and the other PLA forces have surpassed the size and the capabilities of virtually every other country except for the US and maybe a handful of other countries. The PLA Navy has something like 800 ships and vessels (probably more including the small support and patrol boats and harbor and port vessels), but the state operated security services CCG (coastguard) and the MSA (maritime safety agency) and the the CRS (marine rescue service) are now officially under the overall control of the navy during a war. The CCG have something like 1,600 ships and boats (including over 250 large ocean going armed patrol ships with helicopters and fast launches) the MSA has 1,200 vessels (with around 100+ large and medium sized ocean going ships) and the CRS has around 100 ocean going rescue and salvage vessels. Most of these vessels are modern. So the Chinese naval and coastal and inshore defence and security forces have well over 3,000 craft, including many hundreds of large and medium sized ocean going ships. The carriers that are actually in service are the CV 16 and the CV 17 (Type 001/001A) but at least two other full sized CV carriers and three other LSH Type 075 (45,000 tons and 830 feet long) helicopter carriers are currently being built in several shipyards. So with a few years the PLA Navy carrier fleet will be at least 7 very modern ships at least.

@James Lum I have seen pictures of a PLA Navy Type 072 LST with a large turret on the bow, and I have heard that this new type of weapon will be much cheaper, more accurate and will have a greater range than conventional artillery. The problem with most modern weapons is that they are so expensive that only fairly small numbers of the latest types of equipment can be bought by most countries, for example the British RN has two huge CV Queen Elizabeth class carriers, but they are so expensive that they will only be able to buy a fraction of the F35 fighter jets that they are supposed to carry. The cost of the new DDG destroyers means that only 6 will be built and the FFG frigates will be around 12 or so. In other words, the Royal Navy will have less than 20 major escort vessels due to the high cost. I believe that the new gun that you are referring to will be as effective as a million dollar cruise missile yet will be much much cheaper. The lazer air defence systems that are already in use and are being developed are much much cheaper than SAM Air Defence systems and I think that in the future the main countries of the world will try to develop new types of inexpensive weapons that can replace the very expensive equipment that is used today.

Actually the J-15 is an incomplete copy of the Russian model. They had so many that have crashed because the handling is too sluggish and the chinese engines are junk ! The only other option is the chinese pilots are inferior? And it's a ski-jump carrier from the old USSR that has so many problems itself.

Is China planning an indigenous carrier based jet? just curious, I knew they currently use a derivative of the Su-33 but I've heard they are planning to make their first Carrier from scratch (or have already started) so I wonder if they'd be making their own carrier based jets or do they plan on keeping with the Russian jets for the time being.. J-15 is a reverse engineer of an airframe designed in the 70's, with China making 5th gen fighters they should be capable of a decent 4+ gen carrier jet.
