I want to show this video to people who say “sign language should be universal.” They mean well, but NO it shouldn’t. Here’s why: you can see how Japanese culture is incorporated Into the signs. The motion for eating for breakfast and lunch resembles chopsticks (because in Japan chopsticks is part of their lifestyle) and in the greetings like “hello”/good afternoon” look like two people bowing to eachother.

Yes. The only universal language is math (at least in our galaxy...)

I completely agree with you, but how cool would it be if there was another form of sign language that was universal, it could be simple words, it wouldn’t have to have many words, just enough to be able to communicate with others who normally you couldn’t communicate with. Simple things like hi, how are you, good, bad, how do I get to __, left, right, up, down, train, car, bus, bike, ride, food, hungry, help, hurt, leg, foot, arm, hand, sorry, thank you, etc. just simple things in a “universal sign language” completely separate from the signs of other languages and cultures just so there are things that can be communicated easier. I think that would be amazing.

This was very helpful! Do you have suggestions for learning different sign languages? I'm currently conversational in ASL and was interested in JSL.
@DeafJapanTV9 жыл бұрын
+Kathryn Hong The best way is to meet Deaf people from different countries. Aside from that, if you can go to a deaf event like a DPHH (deaf professional happy hour), sign language class or a Deaf professor who teaches ASL, they may have a good idea of where to meet Deaf people from other countries.

So many different types of sign languages are interesting… it’s cool to see what means something in American sign but means a completely different thing in Japanese.

Atra Bouadma it's kind of challenging to find a Deaf Japanese person available to do private lessons. I can try to ask around and make a video introducing someone.
