Its like, when you first hear this album, that's all you're doing: Hearing it. Its like "Okay yeah, my nigga back." But if you actually LISTEN to this joint more and more, you start hearing stuff. For example January 28th "Can I make a million dollars off a rap tune?"// A Tale of 2 Citiez "What's the value of a thing?" "Last night, WE pulled up on a nigga at the light like..."//G.O.M.D "Lord will you tell me if I change? I wanna go back to Jermaine." "My nigga done went Hollywood." Lyrics like that, that are kind of hidden, give off a message that turns the entire track upside down for you. Its like every time I hear a song on this record, I learn something new. This man right here? A mastermind. I cant stress enough how even though people claim they love Jermaine, he's STILL the most slept on. And I'm not talking about celebrity status or anything, I'm talking about his material, his flow, his persona. It sickens me when people say their favorite song is "Wet Dreamz" or "Power Trip". Like get the fuck out. No doubt these are great songs, but people so caught up in mainstream hits, that their mind is too clouded to actually take the time out to LISTEN to the words. Society is so fucked up to the point where having puppies in their video is lame, but having 50 naked females, drugs, and booze in the background is dope. Fuck outta here.

I'm honestly not saying these tracks aren't greats. I'd be a hater if I did. But you and I both know that there's many close minded people that don't respect the music and/or lyrics. They just like it because they play it in the club a lot -_- it's frustrating

Love the way he touched upon privilege between black communities. Cole is black, but treated better due to money, status as celeb, light skin, etc. But all black people come together in the end despite social standing because under the racist ruling, are all still oppressed. The white girl helping them represents allyship. We must ALL come together to stop these injustices.
@JLebowski913 жыл бұрын
Look, I 100% detest ANY forms of racism, and I would stand beside anyone to fight against it. I am curious what "racist ruling" you are referring to though?
@JLebowski913 жыл бұрын
@@Chima207 If the racism is so subtle, then how is it a "racist ruling?" I cant think of one law or regulation that is perpetuating racism. There are certainly, socially racist interactions in many communities. But those are between many different ethnic groups of people. Meaning, racism exists socially between so many racial groups, that it would be dishonest to single out Black people as the most oppressed. Im down to shun people for any racially motivated aggression. But our laws are pretty fair and racism is generally hated and fought. I think there will always be some racists. Thats terrible, but I find it a bit dishonest to be telling people that slavery hundreds of years ago is responsible for the overall success of American society, and therefore, has left this powerful unseen racial hatred. You called it subtle, I imagine you actually believe it to be more severe. I just think most Americans would shut a racist down immediately if they had an interaction with one. Out of curiousity, can give any examples of the "subtle" racism and explain how they are hurting people?
@JLebowski913 жыл бұрын

It seems to me, that this video is a metaphor for where Cole is in his life. He sees himself as a slave, but one who has more comforts than most. He doesn't receive the respect of his people for this, because they believe he sold out at their expense (that he is a puppet of the white man). Though what he comes to reveal later on, was that it is his elevated position that he will leverage as a means of freeing his people. He is sacrificing luxury, and everything he is in order to see his own free. I believe he uses music as his vessel to do this, and perhaps this gives us more insight as to why Cole is driven beyond belief. Why his music constantly reaches out to illuminate the dark path, kept hidden by the distractions of our world.

When you remember that J Cole did what Childish Gambino did first. Love and value them both. Both were called nerd rappers. Both approached that attack the same. However, ironically mocking the new age rap angle (while embracing it) was what made this song hit for me. When Gambino did it last week, attacking it from a different angle, I was just as excited. Hate on post-modernism and irony all you want. But if you can pull it off, Salute!
