And I'm not talking about celebrity status or anything, I'm talking about his material, his flow, his persona. It sickens me when people say their favorite song is "Wet Dreamz" or "Power Trip". Like get the fuck out. No doubt these are great songs, but people so caught up in mainstream hits, that their mind is too clouded to actually take the time out to LISTEN to the words. You called it subtle, I imagine you actually believe it to be more severe. I just think most Americans would shut a racist down immediately if they had an interaction with one. It seems to me, that this video is a metaphor for where Cole is in his life. He sees himself as a slave, but one who has more comforts than most. He doesn't receive the respect of his people for this, because they believe he sold out at their expense (that he is a puppet of the white man). Though what he comes to reveal later on, was that it is his elevated position that he will leverage as a means of freeing his people. He is sacrificing luxury, and everything he is in order to see his own free. I believe he uses music as his vessel to do this, and perhaps this gives us more insight as to why Cole is driven beyond belief. Why his music constantly reaches out to illuminate the dark path, kept hidden by the distractions of our world.
