www.hardknock.tv Exclusive in-depth interview with J Cole! Part 2 starts with Cole talking about the title of the debut album "Cole World -- The Sideline Story" and how it came about. The album has evolved from when we first interviewed Cole almost 3 years ago from having NO ID producing most of it to Cole producing most of it. Cole wants to have 15 songs saying Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has 15, Kanye's College Drop out has 15, even though Jay-Z wants 14.
Cole addresses the criticism that he should work with more mainstream producers saying he has something to prove about his own production. He would rather go out swinging on his own than go ask Swizz Beatz for a radio record. No diss to Swizz intended. How can you knock a man for trying to take control of his own destiny??
Cole says that he has been producing since day 1 and tells the story of the first song he ever did saying he did the beat from one of his Moms cd and wrote the story to that. He was 15 and the song is called The Storm.
Cole says that he appreciates Jay-Z being hands off and its Jay'z respect for Cole's artistic vision that has allowed Cole to do his own thing.
As the conversation moves along Cole speaks on the High and Lows of the journey, which has been the making of Cole World- The Sideline Story.
Speaking of frustrations he says that the leak of Lost Ones hurt cause the song wasn't finished and he wanted fans to hear it with in context of the whole album but at the end of the day Cole says his destiny is his destiny and he doesn't see leaks hurting him.
Want more??!!! Stay tuned for part 3!

Respect to an artist that's so tied into the feel of albums still. Illmatic wouldn't have been the same record to me if I had heard some of the songs leaked like the internet does today. And not running to radio tied producer - keeping to self. Sounds like Cole has a damn firm grip on the way allot of us think the game should be.

It’s the what if part that gets me every time I think about Cole putting out FNL as an album instead of a mixtape. Don’t get me wrong I love Sideline Story and I think that album has some amazing songs on there, but the emotional attachment that I have with FNL is quite heavy and I feel Cole would’ve had a classic debut album with FNL, like Kendrick with GKMC. The question of how many classic studio albums does Cole have wouldn’t even exist because FNL would be undeniably a classic studio album in Cole’s catalog followed by 2014 FHD. Some think that Cole don’t even have 1 classic studio album, regardless of the success that FHD had. Me personally, I think that FHD is his classic album, but I often throw FNL in there too even though I know it’s a mixtape, but with album qualities.

@hardknocktv i appreciate these interviews, best in a long time, but like many other Cole fans I've been purposefully avoiding listening to Lost Ones. Just can't understand the logic of using the song, especially after you specifically talked to him in person about how much he hates leaks! I'm pretty sure if you'd asked Cole during this interview if you could post a snippet of Lost Ones, even 5 seconds of it, in the video he wouldn't have liked it. Apart from that great interview.

Songs always get leaked. The only way you can stop that shit is to keep those tracks locked up in the studio and not dropping it till the day it's time for it to be heard. But even then your songs get leaked. Just something you can't stop.

@shahinur95 Personally, I hate when I hear random snippets of songs before the album is released. The artist probably wants you to hear the album from beginning to end; the way it was intended to be heard. Leaks could also result in less sales. I know people who will just download a crapload of leaked songs and not buy the album. And I'm sure it's annoying when your stuff gets leaked and people say "it sucks" when it is actually an unfinished/unpolished track.
