One thing that virtually nobody seems to have caught about Cole is that not only is he not afraid to compete, but he is quite specific on how he competes with other rappers. He competes by having the best verse on a song that they do together. There's so many bars stemming from KOD up to MDL where he talks about not getting smoked on a song or cooking other rappers on a feature. Again, the earliest example I can think of is the video for "Middle Child". Has anyone actually listened to the man??????

No cap he already saw what it was and was like you know what I refuse to battle a friend especially when Dot didn’t really diss him in the first place. I hope everyone talking about this just hip hop this just bars sees what it is. Dot and Drake really don’t rock with each other and it’s been like that for a long time. It’s impossible for this one to not be personal which again is why he bowed out. He smoke niggas on tracks and proved that by holding his own on Pi he not ducking smoke he’s ducking drama and I applaud him for that.

You obviously are a listener of Cole. With that being said, he's always rapped about MC's lying about who they are. I think this was a conceptual EP where he's rapping from the average MC's perspective. Everything is cap. He drops a few clues in his bars, like when he says he doesn't care about lying once he learned everyone was a fraud, and he forgot he was J. Cole. I'm surprised no one has picked up on it. I will say this though, you can't ask for smoke and then stop, drop, and roll soon as you see some seep under the door. It's unfortunate because the fall has been swift and unforgiving. I can't take him out of the big 3 like everyone else, because his pen and his rapping ability can't be taken away. I do however, have a conversation starter. Listen to Fire Squad and interpret the end of that song. Seems to align somewhat with his recent decision.

That's a fact. I've thought to those songs and bars as well. This is a lot more in line with who he's been telling us he is recently. You can hear how conflicted he was about feeling like he should care about competing for the #1 spot since Born Sinner and Forrest Hills Drive.

Ok. I did my research and am finally caught up. I'm not disappointed that Cole walked tge diss back. I'm disappointed he couldn't compete with a clear conscience. Nobody forced him to write those lukewarm bars. I wish that he really wanted to compete and was able to find a way to do it that was still on brand but was razor sharp. Actually prove his big 3 boast with skill. Skill I think he has. But he permanently knocked himself out the running from the sport of hiphop but not the craft of rapping or the overall culture of hiphop. That's just my take

Cole was talking big ish for the pass five years about him being that guy and bodying anybody who step up to challenging him. Then Kendrick had to remind him who he was. The diss track Cole did was recycled bars that didn’t hit like he expected it to, and he didn’t believe half the tuff he stated in it, hence why his spirit was in limbo. HipHop is about competitive bars. If you’re not built for it, don’t pop off. Let him be on his spiritual journey, but he better stay in that lane only. This wasn’t about no “bloodbath”. This would of been the safest battle ever in HipHop history, and we got robbed of bringing the spirit of HipHop back for the first time in years.

How do you know it would’ve been the safest in history? You dumb bro. You forget that Kendrick is a blood outta Compton? You think it’s just something that’s tied between these two individuals and them alone? They got people on both sides. Both sides where someone would take offense to “something” eventually. When they see each other. Any of that. You act like you know these people and how things will play out. It didn’t feel right for him. So he took it back and scratched the diss off of his latest drop. YOU ain’t hip hop because the fact that you are saying the “safest” in history means you KNOW how shit get down. Until people come together. You don’t know how anything would’ve played out. Thank you for representing the Noname situation accurately. I'm very critical of Cole's handling of the situation, but I'm tired of people pretending Cole wasn't obviously a target of Noname's original post and Cole just came at her randomly. And people are acting like Cole was viciously dismantling Noname when he was really big brothering her like he's always been known to do (which was still inappropriate in this situation). I feel like people don't have to be dishonest to critique Cole for the Noname situation.

UPDATE....J.cole was right. Of course, i knew he did the right to begin with because he followed his intuition. Even though initially i didn't see it as anything other then competition, but when he said he didn't feel good in his spirit i understood. i still think competition healthy if used properly, but in rap beef it goes to show that there are no official rules to this. And if there were, rules can be broken because of how egoistic the individual is. J.cole is still a highly competitive person, but it's a more evolved version of competition. He chooses to be the best he can be in his rhymes and challenges others to do the same. Either way, it just goes to show that if it doesn't feel right, don't do it. Your decisions may not make sense to others, but your intuition has a higher knowledge that alot of people cannot understand at least at the moment. Glad people are seeing this now and seeing the message.

When i was listening to the album i was thinking too how full of shots it was and trying to reconcile the two things..and i think you may well be right, it is a persona, a way of being and talking that people are expected to put on...ultimately as you say perhaps in the future there will be recognition that greatness can be measured in many different ways in hip hop..i feel like that would be a great thing

THIS is the reason why that apology was a b*tch move. Not because he doesn't want to battle with Kendrick, aka. his 'friend' that clearly doesn't care about him as much, but the fact that he already created and released a full diss track, that will be on the internet forever. You don't constantly claim to be the greatest boxer in the game, step in the ring, punch a niqqa and then quit when he's about to swing back. Trying to look like 'the bigger man', when all he actually did was begging Kendrick indirectly to not knock him out. Truly pathetic.

So why spend his career making CONTROVERSIAL STATEMENTS LIKE HE THE GOAT AMD THE BEST ON A VERSE it’s completely comical how y’all turn everything into a kumbaya moment…. it’s so dam soft and why the culture is dying… when did competition get demonized it’s corny so if that’s the case let’s do away with EVERYTHING FUCK EVERY COMPETITIVE THING zzzz the world will be unfuckenbareBle …..

J Cole fans are the problem. He is taking accountability while they are making excuses. They can’t except the fact that their favorite rapper has never been the best, and now he has given them no choice. No different than your favorite team that loses every year…

Jcole not saying he not the best or can go "bar for bar" with anyone. Clearly we've already seen n heard it which made him who he is and where he is today. It's like what dude says who and what Jcole represents and the slap boxing your friend analogy.

I didn’t perceive it as Cole conceding. It seemed opportunistic. He had weeks of sitting on that diss song to decide to be the bigger man, but no, he likes the theater. He likes the sport. And by rolling over immediately after dunking on Kendrick, he’s backed Kendrick into a corner. If Cole were really trying to concede, he’d give kendrick time to respond, then bow out.
