He's saying you don't have to pick your favorite artists and albums based on what everyone thinks. Don't feel pressured by what other people think to pick some artists or albums as your favorites unless you genuinely like them and you truly relate to the music you listed as your favorite. This is true and shouldn't be a debate at all
@elstovon2 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s a fine point in theory but he executes it horribly with fully anecdotal examples. It’s totally possible for a 12 year olds top five to be on some 90s shit, doesn’t make them fake or “performative.” Just because a person says they like some of the most popular albums or artists doesn’t mean they don’t actually like it?

@kenmoops75472 ай бұрын
Exactly. Believe it or not, people were debating in the early-to-mid 2010s if Kendrick should be considered Top 10 of all time. I'm like, didn't YOU oldheads say Nas was top 3 MINIMUM after Illmatic dropped? Years later, we can see Nas was able to go the extra mile and continously drop quality projects well into his nearly 30 year career, but lets not forget people put him in the convo off rip. It's why I put a lot of newcomers with a lot of potential in my top 10, and it changes constantly with new eras. At one point, Lil Baby was a top 10 rapper because of his versatility. Another rapper, Richie Rey, only dropped ONE album that was like 20 minutes and the project was so well written, paced, composed, and showed so much potential that he slid his way into my top 5 for YEARS without having dropped a follow-up project yet. We can all agree Biggie, Rakim, Ghostface, n nem are some of the best to touch the mic, but there's no way half of these people in my generation have really delved into their discographies like that. Those same people be putting Pac over Big just because they heard he's more conscious, even though anybody who's heard both can agree that Biggie was overall more consistent as an artist and rapper. Pac is a legend, his storytelling was a trailblazing moment of history, but I think Kendrick, Danny Brown, JID, Andre 3000, and Aesop Rock are better storytellers. You may disagree and that's GREAT, awesome, but let's talk about it cause I feel like we discrediting a lot of new artists for absolutely no reason besides glorifying an age of hip hop that is decades behind us.
@Beat_daK0tonai_oi2 ай бұрын
But why not. If I were to recommend you a movie to watch you would not be this contrarion. Especially if you look online and see that the fans rated it this high, and the critics rated it this etc. This only occurs with music, specifically Hip Hop. Now do the recommendations tend to be the same across the board many times, yes. Does the novice rap listener sound like a mindless drone just spewing out classic after classic when talking about their favorites, Yes. But that's just the start of the journey, in listening to old classics u can gage what u like or dislike within the genre, and u might even surprise yourself with what you gravitate towards. I agree with Tyler's take of Individualism as a rap fan. just remember that Tyler never really got anything from those classics because they weren't melodic or musical enough for his taste, but that doesn't mean that that would be the same case for someone else.

Sometimes you gotta step out of your comfort zone and realize some of the shit you enjoy can still technically be terrible in certain ways but can make up for it in other areas with its inexperienced, improper or untrained ways. There are guilty pleasures with music, tv shows, movies etc. You know its trash, surface level, pointless etc on one hand but still find yourself enjoying the art regardless of its lack of skill, intelligence, awareness, content etc. I personally wanna know both of your favorite lists and objective lists when talking about certain things in music. People say cherry bomb is ass and I can see why but its still my favorite Tyler album because of its wild energy mostly and its way better than 'Igor' and 'call me if you get lost' imo but technically those two albums are generally better written songs throughout and not as messy or annoying.

Instead try asking “Most underrated” instead of “Best” It’s short circuits the “performative” answers and avoids ppl talking past each other. A lot of ppl are so enamored with their own opinions they think “Best” = “my favorite” and vice versa without even realizing it.
@aawake2 ай бұрын
not necessarily a better framed question, as its now forcing them to go niche or with smaller artists, peoples favorites can still be big artists
@interloc12902 ай бұрын
@@aawake not necessarily. You can be a big artist who is not as “big” as they should be. Technically if you’re the second biggest artist in the world and you SHOULD BE the biggest then you’re underrated. For example my most underrated list features Lupe Fiasco and LL cool J who were both huge artists. I consider them underrated because they were both the FIRST to successfully do something that continues to be a necessary staple of the genre, long after their time. Framing the question this way forces ppl to identify the metrics they think everyone else is using as well as their own implicitly. Either way it’s almost always a much more interesting conversation.

I use to listen to a lot of old school stuff and I'm 26. The homies would kickit back in the day and show eachother different music and thats how we got into hardcore hip hop and boom bap. But we would still check for the new guys too, but most of us hated the 2016 list of the XXL and we hated that music was changing. So honestly I never got into 69, Yachty, Uzi, Pump, Trippie, Carti, YoungBoy, Pop Smoke, Future and all those dudes. We did like some Juice Wrld. We loved xxxtentacion and Ski. And that's about it. The stuff I honestly listen too that doesn't get old to me is like Mac Dre, Andre Nickatina, The Luniz, RBL Posse, J Cole's Born Sinner and Forsest Hills Drive, Kendrick's Good Kid Maad City and Section 8.0, Drake's Nothing Was The Same and If You're Reading This It's Too Late, Joey Badass's 1999, ASAP Rocky's Live. Love. ASAP, Mac Miller, YG, Isaiah Rashad, Ab Soul, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Dom Kennedy, Nipsey Hussle, Vince Staples, Tyler The Creator,and Earl Sweatshirt. Those are the main ones I go back on the most. I check out for some Doja Cat, SZA, GloRilla, some Kodak, some 21, and Jack Harlow. Shoot even some Olivia Rodrigo and Mac Demarco lol, but to me Bay Area music never dies and early 2010s rap never dies. 🔥👌

Tyler always been an advocate for people to be themselves in every interview so this isn't surprising. He's completely right, there's no such thing as having better tastebuds as someone else so why would it be the same with music. If i like a particular kind of music but you don't, it's my job to express why this kind of music has my heart, not why it's the greatest music you'll ever hear. People have these kind of conversations and a lot of other topics the wrong way and don't even see it, it's disappointing because we have so many tools to be unique & become better individuals but we still try to walk in a single file line. We are the most ignorant generation not because we are stupid or dumb, we are because we have tools to be very smart & express our uniqueness as individuals but we still choose not to use him for that. Instead we use them incorrectly. We use them to try and speak for everyone else, I noticed that too with the internet Tyler, everyone wants to have the absolute correct opinion but that's bot possible, at all in fact because it's just an opinion. Not an objective fact written down.
