I don't know how it works in USA, but in New Zealand there's a program called Working for Families. This rewards tax credits to parents. It's a tiered system that drops off as your household income rises. This is pretty much what JD Vance is talking about. I don't think it's a bad idea fundamentally, because parents bear additional costs. The biggest issue with these sorts of systems are how they introduce perverse incentives. Not just in the sense that people will mass manufacture babies in order to abuse the welfare state, although there will be a couple people that do that. The problem with a tax credits like this that are scaled to provide the biggest benefit to the lowest earners is the introduction of steep marginal tax rates. If you work more or get a pay raise or a better paying job, you may cross a threshold for the tax credits you are eligible for. This means that earning more can mean taking home less. I think parental leave is better. We do both in New Zealand. I think USA should look at maternity leave as the most immediate gap to address.

These credits helped during COVID as well; while most of us received only one payment of $1000, people with kids were seeing consistent aid. That being said, I don’t know how extensive it is or if it is a system as extensive as New Zealand, but people still abuse the system! They don't 'lower taxes' but there is a child tax credit. The funny thing is his proposal is actually how the law currently works. People who have children get tax breaks/credits that single people don't get. "Parents will pay less tax!" Everyone cheers. "Non parents will pay more tax!" Everyone boos. And he’s also trying to say that stepkids don’t count. With our current tax law they do because it’s a married household. But yea that’s why it’s so absurd because we already have ways to help people with children.
