dilla was known to play his drums all the way thru a track opposed to just a 4 bar loop and the notes on the upbeat are similair to ghost notes, dilla wanted that live drummer feel. dope video.

That's a for real helpful tip right there man. Explains how it sounded so natural n humanized. anybody know If Dilla played drums like Questlove? Wonderin what inspired his loose sound when the rest of the industry was pushing quantize as the standard rule n he knew to toss that shit out lol

@@SpinSurgery actually it was the other way around. Dillas loose drum style made Questlove change how he would drum.

Very informative tutorial! I'm enjoying all of your Dilla inspired techniques videos!!! What my ear is hearing, is a fairly constant snare/clap & hhat, but what's contributing to the overall funk/feel, is the kick. The kick is what has the very 'free' feel, and lends the beat it's J Dilla signature.

Another great new resource is Melodics, Think of it as guitar hero but you use a MIDI controller. Guys like Jeremy Ellis, Jazzy Jeff, and Gas Lamp Killer all contribute tutorials that you play a long with + Classic breaks such as the Amen and Think break. It's subscription based, like 9 bucks a month. Originally I thought it'd be cheesy, but it has made improvements in my timing and finger independence. Also i recommend watching actual drummer tutorials.
@beatmarketproductions7686
@beatmarketproductions7686 7 жыл бұрын
skills823 the way I create drum patterns is following the rhythm. What this tutorial is saying is your basic triple and swing method. Its a common method used by jazz drummers. Listen to jazz drummers and get a feel. I created my own drum pattern signature buy listening to old jazz records. I been producing since 92 and still use this method. When I make beats you can tell I did it vs one of my boys and so on.

So many MCs and producers never get past the crochet phase. Quavers and semi quavers are where it's at 😊 Also you right on the rakim tip bro

cool video , i use to think he was messing around with the time shifter or something. or that the mpc3000 had more settings : Dilla was a beast & i'm sure he knew his machines like the back of his hand !

yo! Been lurking on these videos for ages now and super inspiring (thank you!).. quick question, is this kit one that you sell or give away? Would be dope to follow along with the same kit.

For anyone who actually has a problem with the snare time - just count 16s instead of 8s, it's on 16. Same place where the first kick is on the classic boom bap thing he starts playing after - B-boom boom bap. the "B" is on 16 and the "boom" after is on 1. Of course there doesn't need to be a rule, you could offset just this extra drum with triplets or something else, depends on the rest of the beat.
