The way Dilla sampled 10cc for workinonit is nothing short of genius.
@josephhuman22018 жыл бұрын
On the music theory end of this, its pretty cool stuff. You're working with polyrhythms. Using 7/4 time with the keys over 4/4 on the drums. Very nice. Lots of fun, and pretty unexplored in popular music. The first example that comes to mind is Street Lights by Kanye West off of 808s and Heartbreaks. The song is in 3/4 with a piano part playing 4/4 in the back

Great bar loops for yall! Try this out: the first number stands for the bars in a loop, and the second stands for the amount of times you'll need to cycle them to fit on a 4/4 beat. 3x4 = 12 ; 5x4 = 20 ; 6x2 = 12 ; 7x4 = 28 ; 10x2 = 20 ; 11x4 = 44 . 3, 5 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 11 bar loops work fine for a 4/4 beat. Repeat the loop until you hit a multiple of 4, and you'll have an interesting cycle.

Slick! I got inspired to loop samples or percussion to a scale, like Aminor scale in notes ascending; - A,B,C,D,E,F,G...A. THe last A is like the C on the piano, just an octave higher. So 8 bar loop still. I figure this is easily done by transposing samples by semitones according to the scale. ;) Let me know if anyone wants to try this, Im allready on it so would love to hear others! also You can use a 6key scale where all keys are harmonic to make random triad chords. There would be many combinations such as: 123, 213, 132, 124, 125, 126, 136, 143 etc etc. All would sound complimenting and can be put into a drum rack or something.

First: Thanks so much for taking the time to make these great videos! Always fun and always informative! That said, I was wondering if you can help me understand this technique a bit more. You tell us 4x7 chords "Works" across a 7 bar pattern. So What? What does this result in? your example is still programed in 4/4 time, I notice, so it doesn't change the time signature--right? But you saying the 7 bar technique makes your beat more "haunting" doesn't seem to be the correct answer either because, isn't that more a result of the instruments you use and the key? How is programing a 7 bar sequence different than programming an 8 bar pattern for instance---other than 7 bars is one less than 8? Does it end up FEELING like 8 bars so a rapper can rap over it without getting messed up? Thanks again!
@Verysickbeats8 жыл бұрын
right, it doesn't change the time signature and maybe i shouldn't have said haunting if thats what i said LOL.. anyway its just a technique if you're tired of using 4 or 8 bars all the time.
