All tbese Stürm & Drang early symphonies by Haydn are early masterpieces, as yet unequalled in tbeir thrilling elegance & interest. For Haydn in his music had a unique characteristic relaxation, elegance & suaveness which is uncommon in either Mozart or Bwethoven.

Not really convinced that any of Haydn’s sturm und drang period music - even major key works like this - could be described as elegant, suave or relaxing, and certainly not more so than Mozart. Symphony 41 was composed probably in 1768 and was about the 47th composed, so it is not really ‘early’, but it was towards the start of Haydn’s sturm und drang period c.1765 - 1773, though there are very few features of that particular style in this work. As such, there are aspects of the music that fit your chosen adjectives. You’re absolutely right about these works being fascinating masterpieces - they are fantastic works, and some of them such as 26, 44, 45, and 49 for example, are amongst the greatest symphonies of the eighteenth century.

Sturm und Drang? Goethe finished his "Werther" in 1774. I am curious where this concept comes from, if not from Goethes poetry (Herder and Schiller were also involved).

The term sturm und drang was first used at the start of the 20th century to describe some musical works of largely - but not entirely* - Viennese origin c.1765-1775. Your quite right that the anachronism of the appropriated musical sturm und drang pre-dates the actual literary one. There were other reactions to the rather lightweight galant music of the time besides ‘sturm und drang’: CPE Bach’s empfindsamer Stil being one such example, and Gluck’s seminal and influential ballet Don Juan (1761), and the original Italian Orfeo ed Euridice (1762) being amongst the better known ones. * JC Bach’s g minor symphony Opus 6 No 6 written in England being an obvious example.

(1769 ca) La concentrazione espressiva e il livello di costante ispirazione di tutti e quattro i movimenti pongono questa sinfonia sul limite della sua categoria, inserendola già in parte nel filone delle sinfonie in stile "Sturm und Drang" formalmente perfette. L'assenza del cembalo conferisce all'orchestra la sua definitiva veste, veramente omogenea e sinfonica. Allo splendore del suono contribuisce inoltre la tonalità celebrativa di Do maggiore che impone, come al solito, l'uso di trombe e timpani. LDC
