The Herd with Colin Cowherd

3 ай бұрын

Lance Zierlein is covering the NFL combine in Indianapolis, and he takes the time to join Colin Cowherd to break down his thoughts on this year's NFL draft class. He responds to Colin comparing Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy to Bryce Young, and answers whether he believes McCarthy's size will hold him back in the draft. He also talks the odds for Caleb Williams, and breaks down what concerns him about Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

Two points in response. First, Cowherd is pretty unreliable when it comes to facts. So it's not always a good policy to rely on his factual claims. Second, in Cowherd's defense, listed weight and actual play weight are not always the same. Rosen did have a slighter frame that worried a lot of scouts - regardless of what he was listed at or perhaps measured at the Combine.

They actually asked him to run an NFL style Pro offense. In fact, he's the most NFL ready QB in this class. He wore a wristband, had to diagnose defenses, personnel groupings, change plays, can go through a read progression, etc. He took what the defense gave him and made NFL throws with similar plays that are run in the pros. Capeb Williams would have a wide-open receiver or an easy hand-off on an RPO, and he would instead pull it and bail, taking sacks and throwing picks in the process. Bo Nix was the only other QB that could do similar things. Williams is definitely the most talented in this class, but JJ is more NFL ready .

And his arm isn't impressive enough to overcome and cerebral shortcomings. But above all, this isn't my first year watching sports. What I mean by that is every year we argue about top qb prospects, most of them don't pan out, then we purposely forget we ever defended these guys when we realize they suck, then do it all over again with a new crop of qbs. Well I'm not doing that this year. I think Caleb is the only one of the top 5 qbs who will definitely be a starter in 5 years, with Maye and Penix on the bubble.

Can't rate Lance Zierlein as an analyst. In the 2021 draft he had Trey Lance as his number 2 player because "he set his own protections in college." If that's what he's heavily weighting in evaluating quarterbacks he has no business doing it at all

I really don't know what Zierlein is talking about with Drake Maye, what is he think he's seeming on film? This guy had Bryce Young AND Will Levis above Stroud, and had Richardson to the Ravens in the 20s (like 12 hours before the Ravens resigned Lamar). I'm not trying to armchair GM, but it seems like whatever Lance considers a highly graded QB doesn't actually translate into NFL success (like, at ALL). Nate Tice has been lights out on QB prospects for years, had Stroud 1 with a bullet last year, and is extremely high on Maye and low on Daniels (which makes me even more sure Lance needs to update his grading to 2024, or completely overhaul his process)

Comparing JJ McCarthy to Bryce Young is football heresy. One's a perennial, all-time college QB who had one "bad year" with one of the worst coached teams in the league while having an awful OL. The other is an average at best college QB who never did anything in college of note.

Sorry Colin, and I love 90% of your takes, but you are totally off on this one. J.J is currently at 219 and last year he begin the year over 220 and thought he came in too heavy/Muscular for his throwing game. Please meet him in-person and you’ll change this false narrative. He has thin frame that could easily get bigger, but isn’t necessary. He is bigger and faster than Jayden, Penix and Bo. Go watch this year combine and look at him next to these 3 QB’s. You are using his listed old weight 2021.

A low end comp would be Zach Wilson. A high end comp is tougher because McCarthy hasn’t thrown all that many passes. It’s fashionable now to be on the McCarthy bandwagon. It seems to happen every other year that a quarterback gets a major hype train because his team won. McCarthy had the luxury of playing behind the best offensive line in the FBS. Zach Wilson had the luxury of playing behind easily the best offensive line in the Mountain West Conference. I’m not saying McCarthy will bust like I predicted Josh Rosen to bust, that was an easy call. I have no idea if McCarthy is ready for the NFL.
