J.K Rowling Doesn't Understand Slytherin - Part 1

- Yes, I won't deny that Harry, Ron and Hermione deserved that points for protecting the Stone, but the way Dumbledore did it was humiliating to the Slytherin kids. Waiting them to think they won, letting them celebrate, and then basically saying "but FUCK YOU, Ron Weasley playied chess!" And, of course, there's that point of view of these three breaking the rules all the time and being rewarded for it. Hor frustrating it must be for the fols of other houses. - The division between the traits sound too much as the traditional "fair, brave, golden knight who fights for justice" x against "the cunning, sneaking villain who try to reach his goals by means that are not honorable according to these arbitrary honor rules". - Draco Malfoy is not a perfect character. Not even a good person. But he's interesting, complex and has the potential to be redeemed. Young people generally are not very good in distinguish why they like a character. Is it because we identify with them? Because we admire them? Because they are well-written and interesting? We understanding and feel compassion for them? We have a crush on them? We feel poweful by imagining ourselves as them? Now, being a 20 years old, I can answer this, but I coudn't when I was 11, 12. Plus, girls are strongly exposed to romantic heteronormative ideas, so is very easy to translate wrong these feeling when the character is a young pretty male. I used to say, when I was a preteen, I had a crush on Gaara from Naruto and Lelouch from Code Geass. I never did. I liked them as interesting characters. I felt empaty for them. But I liked them, and I didn't know how the explain why I liked them, so I just kinda transated this way. What I mean for all of this is that Draco's fans probably did the same thing. Not all, but a good plenty of them.

Harry was the one who saved everyone's sorry asses, so I will concede that he deserved points (that or whatever that award that they gave Tom was called) for that. Ron and Hermione, while they both contributed in their own ways, should not have gotten _nearly_ as many points. On top of that, Dumbledore, for the sake of professionalism, should have just quietly awarded Gryffindor the points while Harry was recovering. The scene during the end-of-year feast honestly just felt like a massive "fuck you" to everyone that wasn't in Gryffindor.

Harry Ron and Hermione didn’t deserve any points because they broke DOZENS of school rules to go confront Quirrell, and what they did had nothing to do with school and extracurriculars like Quidditch which is what the point system is based around. Harry shouldn’t have been rewarded for breaking the rules. Think about when McGonagall gave Draco detention for breaking the rules to spy on Harry and Ron,..

The most sad thing is that Slytherin is a house that also appeals to children who have suffered from abuse: the Slytherin qualities such as resourcefulness, fraternity, cunning, self-preservation and determination are very strong in children who come from abusive homes (Regulus, Severus, Tom Riddle(though he was a psychopath, it doesn't change the fact that he WAS abused), and even Harry himself. They'll do anything to survive and rise above their circumstances. So JK Rowling claiming that CHILDREN are evil just for being in that house is plain cruel: because she invalidates their struggles and traumas and labels them as not only inherently bad, but also as underserving of consideration and basic kindness and validation. PS: "Traditionalism" is also a way to implicitly say that some of these children also follow the "family tradition": it is stated mutliple times in the books that some families have more of an affinity with a certain house and therefore it is expected of them to be sorted there (Ron himself said it was a tradition for the Weasleys to be in Gryffindor, same with Slytherin for the Blacks and the Malfoys. Traditions are important in the wizarding world, regardless of your ideological inclination. But since Slytherins tend to be labelled as "dark", they stay among themselves to protect themselves. And it's probably this "segregation" that nurtured the divide between their house and the others. Also, should I remind you of how quick everyone turned on Sirius, regardless of the fact that his friendhsip with James was so legendary it was still talked about to this day? With no trial, and probably because he has the last name Black, he was thrown in prison. Why? Because Blacks are "traditionnally" Slytherins. For Slytherins, Tradition is the same as Self-Preservation, and it's probably what pushed some of them into the Dark Lord's camp: they felt that their way of life, their livelihood, was threatened)

Slytherins are passionate. Yes we want to be the best at what we love. And that's not a bad thing. Yes, we have A LOT of pride, which is not a bad thing either. It is what makes us do what others said we couldn't. We are cunning, but we can also use it for good reasons. And as far as I know being intelligent isn't a bad thing either. We are the biggest judge of ourselves and when we say that we are good at something, it's not arrogance, it's just the truth and it took us a long time to ensure that. Slytherins are dreamers. We make plans about our future and life and will do anything to make them come true. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Slytherins believe that family are not only the people who are connected by blood with them , family are some people we chose. And willing to stand by them is one of the most precious friendship traits. You can find both good and bad people in every house.

Fraternity and traditionalism really do depend on context. Pride and ambition all can be positive when controlled. I agree with you that Rowling doesn't understand the positives that can be found in those virtues. However, cunning usually means deceiving and evading. In one of the books, it's clearly stated that witch-burning never actually hurt any real witches or wizards, and that the fire actually gave them a pleasant, tickly sensation. Hence, the students were asked to write an essay for the following prompt: "Why Witch Burning Was Pointless" (I paraphrased this). So, the "witch-burning" excuse for Salazar Slytherin's pureblood requirement doesn't hold. 😌 I agree with you on everything else, though.

Except there are other ways of killing mages than witch burnings though and the immunity to the flame wasn't even a thing in the medieval century, I think, I am not entirely sure, anyway there is the usual decapitation, imprisonment, being trapped where you can't use either of your hands and your head is used as something to be thrown at with objects, eggs, tomato, etc-etc. Not to mention there are weapons that can be used to hurt witches & wizards, swords, maces, longbow & arrows, magical children can't exactly defend themselves so they're pretty much screwed. Overall Slytherin's wariness towards muggles is justified since they literally are hellbent on killing people like him, those who can do magic.

7:18 One thing I always found interesting was how Crabbe turned out. He was always shown to be stupid and a follower of Draco in books 1-6. While Draco turned out not to be as evil as he seemed, Crabbe actually turned into a really powerful wizard when embracing dark arts and his inner darkness. He had a "evil glow up in book 7". Kinda like how Neville was the bumbling, dumb Gryffindor (but had a hero glow up in book 7).

In Hagrid's defense, he was portrayed as being incredibly ignorant and biased, even by Gryff standards. He also listened waaay too much to Dumbledore, stemming from that fact that Dumbledore was the one to give him a second chance. After he catches wind of the Sirius Black/Peter Pettigrew conflict, he acts a lot more reasonable. I can feel the disappointment from my fellow Slytherins in that scene, it's my 4½ years in privet school all in one scene, the absolutely heart wrenching, gut twisting feeling you get when all you and your house's hard work and effort is immediately cast aside as soon as you get your hopes up at the thought of winning. I guess is because I was an older reader and saw it as a children's book and it was okay if things were over the top. I also saw many of the characters were more like caricatures. I understand why she made Gryffindor wins in the 1st book. She should've let Slytherin win in the 2nd book tho since the themes were around the mystery of that house. She could've had Slytherin coming out on top in a number of things throughout the year but with Harry and the gang still saving the day at the end to create that little bittersweet ending - where the good guys get to appreciate the more important victory and thereby giving important growth to our protagonists for the future. Also, this would make Malfoy a more interesting and formidable opponent.

its not just the house itself, its the connotations attached to the house. Rowling by default attaches Slytherin with the connotation of not just purebloods , but also with traditional wizard culture and wealth. By default, she implies that tradition and appreciating and liking your own culture and wanting its survival is wrong. Not only is this quite a horrible message to send in general (implying that liking ones own traditions and culture is somehow evil and wrong) but its also unrealistic , are we supposed to believe that absolutely no other purebloods anywhere , except for the rich and powerful , felt that their traditions and way of life were being threatened by the encroachment of muggle society (which remember , literally mass murdered wizards throughout history) onto their community via the increasing presence of muggleborns and half bloods? outside of the racial supremacist ambitions of voldemort , muggles literally ARE a threat to wizardkind . and every single muggleborn or half blood is by default yet another possible leak point that could lead to another wizard-muggle war. because these are childrens books, JK rowling went with a black and white morality that is a crying shame. If she were writing a realistic society , death eaters would have come from every house and facet of society , from the rich and poor , and some would have wanted to rule over muggles whilst others would have been afraid of what the muggles could do. she set up a more realistic premise with grindelwald showing wizards the destructive power of muggles during ww2 and arguing that they were in danger. Its just a shame she didnt flesh this out by writing about grindelwalds rise to power in more depth.

Nah, it's not just the Slytherins who care about this, because IRL, people of every stripe care about fair stories, and for HP fans, a factor of that is that we see how biased the books are, and fanfic writers can be fairer on Slytherin and see it can be multidimensional. I feel like some of JKR's establishing concepts failed to grow up when the tone of the books grew up - like the first book had some very Roald Daahl aspects to it (like the way the Dursleys are portrayed) - but the way Slytherin is treated by her did not grow up as the books grew more serious. Given that she still expresses that anti-Slytherin attitude even now? Yeah, this is a problem in her view of such personality attributes as ambition and cunning, which I, as a very un-ambitious person (yeah, I'm a Ravenclaw-Griffindor mix) still can see can have good results.

I just found this video and now this is my favorite, channel, video, and comment section. I have been telling the same thing. I personally feel like JK had someone in her school or college like Slytherin whom she didn't like and not to mention that she herself said that Pansy Perkinson was actually a girl from her school who bullied her. As a slytherin it makes me upset that they don't see what good we have and what good things we have to give like we can be replased at any time and we and are cualities are not important. We are liders who want to use our ámbitos,cunnig and other things to give a vision to the ones that go and truste in use and we want to guide them. Besides it is heartbreaking for me their faces and reactions when they lost the cup because I know that feeling when you work hard and lose because someone was better than you or the teachers love them and you only can confform with working harder to win the next time
