The place was magic in those days, now the store is gone and so is woodward Ave. Everything of the American dream washed away never to return. I think of all the jobs that are no longer there and that amazing store! Thanks for posting this wonderful video, and BE WELL!

I went with my uncle to that legendary 1962 Thanksgiving game where the Lions pulverized the Packers, 26-14. Who knew that it would still be the greatest Lions' game I ever saw?

As a Kid in Pa I always watched this parade, it was wonderful so sad that J L Hudson is gone and that Motor City is in ruins! I still drive Chevy's and proud of it! I remember this very Parade!

THANKS SO MUCH for posting this WONDERFUL parade clip! It is a TREAT to see Captain Kangaroo and his friends at their "magic window", watching the parade along with the children and their families.

@gymnastix This 2-minute and 51-second video clip is the only surviving footage of the 1962 parade, (found on the tail end of a 2-inch quad reel of tape). I wish I had more to share. I obtained this footage from Tom Buckley, EyeOnTv. I have no knowledge of video from the TVParty website.

Wow...this is awesome, especially for me as a native Detroiter. This was back in the days when the Lions played at Tiger Stadium and were still a decent team.

the church in the for foreground (Central Methodist) is located at Woodward and Adams while the background church (St Johns) is at Woodward and I-75 (Fisher Freeway). hard to imagine that area between the two churches is now a parking lot for Comerica Park.

@Gideon1928 The Detroit-based commentators were Dallas Townsend and a gentleman by the name of Bob Murphy. (Information obtained from page A-58 of the TV GUIDE magazine, Thursday, November 22, 1962.)

The Elwood bar was where it was originally, of course. And the shops across from the Fox.

@Gideon1928 BoB Murphy was the Mets Radio announcer for 42 years. "The Voice of Summer" us Mets fans referred to him as. He will be missed.

@kaptainkidshow Did you get this from the TV Party website? If not, I'd like to know from where, if you were TV Party's source of the kinescope/video? Because I have been searching for footage, if not complete programming, of CBS' coverage of the "Thanksgiving Day Parade Jubilee" (as it was called back then) and other special CBS programming for a very long time. I remember a John Philip Sousa march used for the opening & closing sequences, and a shot of a fireplace, with burning logs.

Wasn't loads of fun for the Packers that day. Lions smashed Bart Starr, Lombardi and the Packers 26-14. "What the hell is going on out here??"

Was Captain Kangaroo an actual captain of any kind? Did he serve in WW ll?

After an early graduation from Forest Hills High School in Queens, NY in 1945, during World War II, Bob Keeshan enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, but was still residing within the United States when Japan surrendered. There is no mention at his Wikipedia page whether he reached the rank of Captain.
