J.M.W. Turner’s Visions of Venice - Episode #201 from Emmy Award winning PBS series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop
From Emmy Award winning PBS series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop (Program 201, Season Two)(English Subtitles)
Join David as he takes us on a journey to explore the beautiful Venetian locations that inspired J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) during his three trips to Venice in the 1800's. In this episode, David discusses Turner's experimentation in Venice and how it served as a sensual catalyst for his future works. He briefly demonstrates Turner's drawing techniques in front of the iconic baroque cathedral Santa Maria della Salute, overlooking the Grand Canal. David then travels down the Grand Canal to a location overlooking the Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore. David then travels down the Grand Canal to quickly paint an oil sketch overlooking the Dogana and San Giorgio Maggiore, the same scenes immortalized in many of Turner's transcendent paintings from Venice. We invite you to experience the magic of Venice through the eyes of David and J.M.W. Turner.

These half-hour programs explore the lives, techniques and inspiration of these master artists through a combination of discussion and demonstration in the beautiful locations that inspired them. Another bullseye David. I learned so much about Turner. Not a wasted word. A beautiful, illuminating painted result. All of the theories and ideas of the artist, Goethe, Ruskin are realized in painted examples. Loved it, thank you. -David

Thank you so much David and Connie for that wonderful video. I recently painted some inspired by Turner oil paintings for an Italian restaurant in Tokyo. In 10 minutes you cram in so much information about his style and techniques. Some historians say he used a lot of faster drying tempura for the impastos for him to come back and glaze over the transparent paints. Glazing is so much fun, like you say it’s time travel doing these kind of pictures. Much appreciated all the best from Tokyo James

Thanks as always for posting these. I had not seen this one before (it is dawning on me that I am really only familiar with the first series, not the second one). John Ruskin was mentioned a couple of times, I recall that in the movie about Turner from a decade or so back Ruskin was kind of made fun of. I wonder what the reason was, since he seems to be highly regarded even today.

It is a strange world! Yes, I think that John Ruskin has gone through many different stages of consideration. Kind regards, David and Connie

I started painting about 2 years ago. I saw a Turner at a museum three months ago and was blown away by the light in the painting and how he captured it. This video is wonderful in explaining how he did what he did in theory and practice. Incredibly inspiring and the final painting was gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent!
