I'm sorry if my comments were not clear, I am always in favor of using the "right" instruments if indeed "authenticity" is the goal. I merely wished to point out that there are many, many anachronistic qualities of modern performances which all do indeed make a difference whether subtle or not. Having a non-performing leader of an ensemble has a profound and often-though not always- a deleterious effect on the final performance. The near absence of surviving oboe and bassoon reeds from the 18th century has caused players to develop reeds that produce the loudest sound possible in order to compete with the large choirs and string ensembles in favor today. Though some groups are trying to use "holess" trumpets and horns, it is often simply a practical matter of not having enough rehearsal time to learn and adapt to the more idiosyncratic tuning of the period brass instruments. Of course it's worth doing but for those of us non--amateurs who are trying to make a living in this field, being adaptable is essential.

Colin St Martin, my dear Colin, I agree with the question of the conductor, but Bach at the organ would be very demanding to the musicians. There are examples of extreme harshness, namely the question of the bassoon player that was very sensitive to the remarks of Bach when he called the bassonist a goat! There was even physical violence involved with some friends of the offended instrumentalist. I do not see mr Lutz acting in the same way! there is the idea that the musicians of Bach times were poor players but I'm completely against that idea. I'm myself a composer, I use another pen name for that and I do not pretend to compare to Bach, but I know what is to compose for real people, once I wrote a prelude to an Opera using recursive series of 12 notes in quarter notes with very fast tempo for all the orchestra in a kind of serial counterpoint with no fixed (repetitive) themes that eventually would appear later in the opera. That was going from the tuba and trombones to the harp, it was very difficult to play, even impossible to reduce for piano. The mess was complete, I noticed that in the first orchestral reading. What I did? I rewrote the score during the night just to give a very short prelude with some of the themes played by the brass section, but very slowly, and them some soli using the same themes by the concertino and leader of the celli and flute, also at reduced speed, all finished with a loud cadenza in chords by the tutti, It was great, the music was not so good, I believe, but the effect was much better, therefore the music was also much better after all. The musicians were relaxed and everything went well. I know that the musicians are always complaining, "that is impossible to play" is the most common phrase I heard all the time. Sometimes I have to play it just to show that is not the case. The composer must work with the musicians he has. In Bach times that was particularly true. He writes very difficult parts, I do not believe that such a demanding composer was composing music not to be played in its full extent. The musicians had a lot of time to practice at home, the guilds of musicians in general and brass in particular were severe. They were very proud of the brilliancy of their performances. Saying that, I do not see much difference in having a conductor or a Bach at the organ giving his orders in his strong voice, probably Bach was more demanding than our feeble directors. The musical language was common, probably everything was easier in that concern. We will never know, which is a shame.

D'où vient cette fâcheuse habitude d'utiliser le positif au continuo? Bach n'avait-il pas accès à un orgue?
@konrad.bach4ever
@konrad.bach4ever 5 жыл бұрын

Arguments of authenticity are always far more complex than most of us realize. The most obvious anachronism for me is the presence of a conductor. After that, if we are to go by the historical record, Bach never had women singers nor instrumentalists.

A woman playing the violin does not differ from a man in terms of sound production. Holes in horns produce harsh sound and tuning like a valved instrument of the XXI century. You are posing a false question. Therefore, why not candles or dental treatment similar to the wind players of Bach times? That would be really authentic...

Very funny. I wish I could send you back to Arnstadt in the past when Bach was the assigned organist. Since Bach himself got complains like that after he got back from Lübeck. For: 1) inappropriate harmonies played by the organ. 2) poor supervising over the choir. 3) inviting an unknown girl to sing in the church choir.(according to the historical record of Priesthood Meeting) 4) Again, inviting an unknown girl to the organ console to watch his performance. 5) Composing inappropriate music for the church choir. If you were born in that era, I bet you would have been a person in the church side.
