Actually, he's spot on. Too often chorales are subdivided by the player and are too slow. This is a good tempo here. In 4, not 8.

Ton brings his cooky little personality to his interpretations and thus you can tell how much joy and nuance he finds in the music. So I like it. I play it slower except at funerals because I fear they wouldn't "get it" and just be depressed.

i've never really understood why most organists play this one so slow(perhaps there is misunderstanding regarding performance practice?), and in the process i can't really feel the flow of the music and bask in the incredible chord progressions(and the inner voices) that really are some of the most lushly "romantic" among bach's work(another being var 25 from the goldberg). i was quite pleased to find that someone else plays it around the same tempo that i always have...love you ton :u)~

This music is too dense and perhaps the optimal tempo needs to be synchronised with the brain of listener. (which depends on the age). May be younger people can enjoy it a higher speed.

I can't decide if this man is a genius or an over-rated lunatic. I do feel as though someone should tell him that Bach ornamentation is not simply about wiggling on random notes, yet it should be a well-planned device used to emphasise harmonic tension or add interest. Of course, there is more to it than that, but it shouldn't be random, and it shouldn't be erratically and unnecessarily placed on every other note. In this music, the trills and ornaments should start slowly and grow out of the moving figures which they follow. They shouldn't be too obtrusive to the flow of the music, and I fear that they are on this occasion.

Bach's music is always beautiful, but Koopman way of playing it is (personal opinion) too loose, frequently too fast (not this chorale) and with erratic or ad libitum ornamentation. No doubt but, that he's easiness to play is astounding.
