21 Operas - LOL

The fact d’Albert wrote so many operas is a sign of his great success during his lifetime. I just finished reading a biography of Albeniz. He wrote a handful of operas and was met with hostility when he tried to get them on the stage, even in his home country of Spain. D’Albert was clearly more successful during his lifetime. Tiefland is still a repertoire work in Germany. It was turned into a movie in 1954. And had previously been a silent film in 1922. Nobody writes 21 operas with the intention of being a forgotten and neglected composer. His Cello Concerto and Piano Concerto 2 should be more standard, as they are great works. I’m learning the Piano Concerto now for a Fall performance.

@@danielgloverpiano7693 In his lifetime D'Albert was a major pianistic star which I am sure helped his reputation as a composer, but not now. I recently found the piano roll he made of the Passacaglia, others are on my channel incl. his Beethoven 4.

@@RollaArtis thank you. I know about his tremendous pianism. I’ve done a complete survey of his piano solo works, and there’s not a lot, except for these transcriptions, a sonata, a Baroque type Suite (which I’ve performed) and some character pieces. I find it odd that he wrote so little piano music, and that all but one of his operas was performed in his lifetime. They were spread all over the map: Dresden, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Vienna, Prague, etc. Clearly he was highly regarded as an opera composer. The only other pianist to have such success in opera was Mozart. There absolutely must be some quality to his works which made for such exposure. It makes one wonder why they’ve disappeared mostly. I have a biography in German which I will read one day. You should read of the tremendous prejudice against Saint-Saëns in getting any of his operas performed. Liszt presented Samson and Delilah at Weimar, but it was snubbed at Paris Opera at first. They wouldn’t do it. Why was d’Albert so successful, and in so many different opera houses?
