Wonderful rarely heard piece. All perform admirably with expression and character. Conductor and orchestra are excellent. Bach sets the action with an opening chorus, where later composers use the chorus to conclude and comment on the dramatic elements that have occurred. Later composers replaced the opening chorus with an orchestral overture or suite to preview the coming dramatic elements. This became the singspiel, of which the most commonly known is Mozart’s Magic Flute.

Bach ain't dead...HA. I love this playful secular cantata. In the Conservatory Garden in Central Park, NYC there is a sculpture of Phoebus-Apollo and Pan.

I always wonder what Bach's audience said or thought after listening to this beautiful piece of music and, in particular, its lyrics. Bach is here much more modern than the majority of his contemporaries. Probably Leipzig's citizens were more open-minded than one could think!

This is because Classics were held in very high esteem in Bach's time and before, and they didn't want to censor works of such significance. That's all there is to it. There is no reason to think Bach was approving (in a broader sense) of homosexuality, as he was a pious Christian.

Notice that when Midas mentions his ears (Ohren) at 33:18 the violins predict his fate--Apollo turned them into ass's ears. (He tried to hide them, but his barber knew, and whispered the secret to the reeds by the shore, which ever since have repeated, "Midas has ass's ears." Listen also to Mahler's "Lob des hohen Verstandes" from Des Knaben Wunderhorn."

Oh, this is such a delightful semi-scenic version of one of the best Bach cantatas! The singers do the right amount of stuff to give the "dramma" part in the piece and (almost) everyone looks involved in the story (Sakurada (Midas) and van der Linde (Mercurius) look the least comfortable, but that doesn't stop them to sing their aria very well, especially Sakurada in the coloraturas of his). The cast is generally very good and Alarcòn is having fun and can count on his excellent orchestra and choir.. However, for me Phoebus wins hands down the strife: Immler sings his aria gorgeously, whereas Meerapfel has that sort of "old man sound" that is not too attractive.

The direction of the semi-staged action feels a bit slap-dash and under-rehearsed. This is very much a "dramma per musica", and a comedy at that, so it does call for it, but a bunch of things seem weirdly considered. Like Pan being in an actual costume and mask but nobody else is. And some of the performers still using the score for their arias for some reason is especially egregious (Either stage it or don't). It just feels like the dramatic portion of this was slapped together and they originally meant to just do it fully as concert. They all probably could do a solidly acted comedic performance if they were directed better. But still, musically, they're all real solid. Apollo here actually puts the longing into the performance, whereas some performers do it fairly coldly.
