J. S. Bach: Four Lute Suites - Paul Vondiziano, Guitar.
Just to clarify potential confusion with timings: The timing after each Lute Suite refers to the duration of the work. In terms of locating it on the You-Tube timeline, Lute Suite #1 is obviously at the beginning, Lute Suite #2 is at 15:30, Lute Suite #3 is at 38:26, and Lute Suite #4 is at 59:26.
Lute Suite #1 (BWV 996) (15:40): Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Bourree, Gigue.
Lute Suite #2 (BWV 997) (22:38): Prelude, Fugue, Sarabande, Gigue, Double.
Lute Suite #3 (BWV 995) (20:58): Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte-Gavotte en Rondeau, Gigue.
Lute Suite #4 (BWV 1006a) (16:14): Prelude, Loure, Gavotte en Rondeau, Menuet I-Menuet II, Bourree, Gigue.

Bach, always Bach... Good evening, Mr. Vondiziano.

You are so free of technique that it is as if you are singing the phrases. You've overcome the instrument to lose yourself in the exquisite emotional experience of singing. This must have been how J.S. Bach heard this music when the melodies first came to him. Thanks so much!

Douglas, what a beautiful comment and observation! It is indeed my intention to transcend the instrument and "sing". I have often reflected on that age-old saying about a good instrumentalist which says:"He/she makes the instrument sing!" I think the voice is the primal and fundamental musical medium, and in my own listening and study, I love choral and vocal music, and spend a lot of time with it. As a music-student, (many moons ago!), I was a first-tenor in a very good choir!... Thanks again!

This is absolutely outstanding! There are many great recordings of these suites by all the well known giants, each performance with its own merits, but I've yet to come across one with such "Bachness", both in validity and all-through consistency! This is borderline miraculous, pure genius!

He did a concert in our home Library in a little town of Fife Lake, Michigan. Population was less than 500! The Library reading room was packed out! He was FANTASTIC! What a humble awesome guy! Beautiful tone production. Phrasing was terrific, and as Bach interpreter of piano, this is how I've always imagined his lute suites to be played. World-class performance, and as rigorous as Bach should be, which is something often missed by players like Breams. God bless you.

Hello Arman, You honor me with your comments, especially since you are a pianist who knows Bach. Thank you. To think and feel deeply about the music, work attentively on bringing it forth, and then to have an understanding and appreciative response from one who hears it, is the best reward. God bless you as well!

Thank you Alexander, I value your appreciation for clarity and tone! Those are indeed qualities I have always striven after, seeing that they are, one might say, prerequisites for experiencing and communicating music more fully. I think of it as an alignment of medium and content... Best wishes!

+Minh Ngo Wonderful! I love Baroque music and I am glad to see that that awareness and appreciation seems to be on the rise; may it continue! Just for your information, I also have another Bach recording of my transcriptions of some of the solo violin music (Partita #2 - with the Chaconne - and Sonata #3). If you type my name in You-Tube you will find that, as well as some of my other recordings (not of the Baroque style). Thank you for your wishes! I am currently planning another recording but have not quite decided on all the details. May you be well.

I was fortunate enough to study under Paul for nearly 9 years. I've always said that his 996 Gigue is the best I've ever heard. I struggled mightily with that piece. Paul has a surpassing musical knowledge, he is intelligent and insightful, and he was endlessly patient with all of the baggage that I brought to him; having been largely self-taught until that time. It was an amazing honor to sit 3 feet from him, week after week, trying to get some of that talent to rub off on me. Without question, anything that I do well now, I owe to Paul's influence.

This is a really impressive performance Paul, I also play and Bach is my favorite but I have hard time finding other guitarists I like to listen to, this recording is how I picture the songs in my own head and hope to someday bring it to fruition. The timing, feeling, and clarity really is top notch and the recording is crystal.

Phil, thank you so much for sharing your experience and thoughts with me. You obviously hear the music the way I hear it and try (with relentless hard work) to bring it forth. May your sustained effort continue to bring you closer to your goal, despite the fact that for an artist with a vision of "perfection" the goal can often be elusive......never give up. Persist in your quest!! Best regards!
@philtanics1082

Thanks for the kind words Paul, "perfection" certainly is elusive! I try hard everyday as Im sure you have for many years. I like to try and remember what Christopher Parkening said, and that was "Our goal should to overcome what we lack in ability and talent by what we have in dedication and commitment, and all that takes is self discipline." (That's me lacking talent haha) and of course all that Bach has ever said about such matters involve practice, self reflection, and hard work. But honestly what you did in some of these was really something, and give me motivation that these pieces can sound this good. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing what you have accomplished, its certainly something to be proud of. I wish you all the best!
