Thank you to all who have requested this tutorial. I truly appreciate your patience as I make my way through a huge list of video requests (which will probably take a lifetime haha). I hope you're all having a great week of practicing!

Ahhh I’ve recently done this one as I wanted to learn a second Invention. Im happy that I also did staccato articulation similarly to how you did it. Sometimes I like to play a longer first note, yet still detached, and then two shorter beats after. Very useful tips - loved to hear your thought process

I was thinking of learning two-part inventions this summer! I’m currently working on two extremely difficult pieces and these inventions would be a great refresher for when I get frustrated with those two pieces.
@MikeyOnKeys4 жыл бұрын
They would really teach me to listen to each line that I’m playing. They’re still quite difficult musically.

Hi Josh I just bought this pro practice. I love the way you teach. If you allow me to suggest you something to improve in your lessons I would recommend you showing up the sheet music besides of you instead of you logo (I would put your logo as a watermark instead of occupying half of the image), I mean sometimes I fell lost and I don’t know where exactly are you at, sheet music showing where you are would be very helpful. 😅

I´m not studying that one, but how can one avoid sliding off the black keys - and stumble. They are slippery.

Does anyone has a solution for trills. I don't know why my trills feel so sloppy. and I can't hold my trills for long.
@BlueGrovyle4 жыл бұрын
If they're sloppy, I'd suggest trying to slow it down until you get the note lengths even and speeding back up.
@cwardpiano4 жыл бұрын
Some people think that trills are ALL fingers. Try shaking your wrist as well, while limiting the amount you actually "use" your fingers. This has really helped me smooth out my trills over the years and made them sound less "finger-y". Hope this helps!

Thank you for tis tutorial, Josh! I´m at Wohltemp. 12 (f minor) Prelude - and find myself slipping on the black keys in the broken chords - first half of second rep. I´m trying staccato now. High raised fingers once in a while seems to liberate it a bit as well. The problem with this piece is probably due to not so clever fingerings. There´s a task.

Thank you so much for your amazing ProPractice tutorial, which I found immensely helpful, especially regarding your comments on the trills. Apart from the urtext edition, I have an edition suggesting rather measured three-finger trills, which I didn't like at all. I've learned so much. 🙂

Mr. Wright, I know you are a busy man and most likely will never get to this comment, but I have a question about the trills. It seems in my version of the piece, Bach uses 3 fingers, going back and forth like this: (in the right hand and left) 2313 2313 and so on. But I noticed no one plays the piece like that, they use just 2 fingers. I realized this method helped a lot for my right hand, compared to the normal 2 fingers, but for my left hand, 2 finger trill was much easier. I was wondering if I should just do whatever is most comfortable for me, or follow this book? And, have you seen it like this before, with the 3 finger trill instead of a mere 2? I appreciate all that you do Mr. Wright. Have a wonderful day.

Hey Josh! So I've been working on my repertoire for music uni. I've been playing piano for 3 years (yeah I know, that's nothing) and I'll be applying to uni in 2 years from now. Right now I'm working on movement 1 of Mozart's Sonata in A minor (no.8) and Butterfly Etude as my more difficult pieces. I'm also working on a "simplified" version of the them of Tchaikovsky's first concerto and the theme of Grand March (from Aida, by Verdi) as my easier pieces. I was just wondering if I'm not being too ambitious? I have little to no trouble with the Sonata in A minor, but the Butterfly Etude (which I've only been working on for 4 days) is, obviously, quite challenging. I learn a few bars a day (2 or 3) and I just finished the second line (played very slowly). I'd also like to work on my sight reading and was wondering if you had any suggestions?

When we play the piano, are our fingers supposed to come off the piano and then come down like a hammer? As a simple example, Lets say you put your fingers in c position. When playing C, D, E, F, G, do your fingers just stay down and press? or do they come off the piano as they are about to play? Somone answer this, please. I'm a bit confused about this.
@oliverdorn37194 жыл бұрын
You should use as little movement as possible. Let your hands drop to your sides to see how the fingers naturally curve, and emulate this as much as possible on the keyboard. Often, people forget the idea of 'pulling' tone from the keyboard rather than trying to press it out. Keep a mobile wrist, and remember to prevent your joints from collapsing.

"Late beginner or early intermediate phase?" I'm surprised Wright thinks the Inventions are beginner pieces. Two well known schools with international curriculum consider them at least advanced intermediate. This Invention is RCM Grade 7 (out of 10). I only say this here so that actual beginners or early intermediate players do not get frustrated when they find that this piece is not quite within their reach yet.
