J.S. BACH: Variation 26 from "Goldberg Variations", BWV 988 (read description below!)

This video accompanies the recent video "Should Variation 26 from Bach's Goldberg Variations be Slow?". It is a full performance of the variation on piano at a majestic sarabande-style tempo of quarter = ca. 48. This is the same tempo as I would play the Aria, since both are similar expressive sarabandes (see other video for more on this topic). The most fascinating thing about Variation 26 is that superimposed upon this slow, majestic sarabande always in long notes (notated in 3/4) are more lively "gigue-like" sequences of triplet sixteenths (notated in 18/16). As emphasized in the other video, Bach's addition of appoggiaturas to this variation, discovered in Bach's own hand in 1974, reinforces the theory that this is a "slow" rather than "fast" variation. This is because appoggiaturas are expressive devices that require a certain degree of slowness to be musically effective. Bach would have never added expressive appoggiaturas to a variation that is, as the mainstream believes, a "toccata" to be played as fast as possible. This is why I believe ALL performers have simply gotten this one wrong. Musical evidence makes it clear that Bach wanted Variation 26 and the opening Aria, two authentic sarabandes, to have the same quarter-note speeds.
