Thisversion has the right ring of the nostalgic melancholic expression of the austro-hungarian music of the end of the 29th century. It's wonderful, charming and has an elegantly gentle sadness.

THIS is the exact version that Strauss made the orchestra performed the very day of its premiére. With those "regional instruments" which sadly are not seen nowadays. Pity the opera "Ritter Pasman" is not performed nowadays. It is a masterpiece of music, dance, and voices. It was the best attempt of Johann Strauss to compose a "serious" opera. He was not entirely successful as the public did not understand it. They loved the "other" Strauss, one of the polkas, waltzes, and "musique legére". Jacques Offenbach had a better fate with "Les Comtes d'Hoffman". But I found a recording in youtube, yet without a filmed performance. I shall keep to my quest to see if I find out a full version of it.

I disagree! There are two better conductors of the "Neujahrskonzert": Carlos Kleiber (1989 and 1992; best IMHO) and Mariss Jansons (up to now: 2006, 2012 and 2016)! Just listen! :D

@@MusikPiratCH the New Year concerts, when lead by their own charming concertmaster was a true Gruß from Vienna to the world, sharing harmony and charm. Then came the markets, then Sony took over, and every top-selling maestro and sales-guarantee got the honours; to stand and smile infront of an orchestra that in this very repertoire doesn't even need a conductor. I suggest you don't mix up things. P.S: Karajan's from 1987 was also a historic concert. But then again, Karajan and the Vienna Phil had a mutual understanding going back over half a century. And that's hard to beat, even for the markets.

@@novagerio9244 I think you mix things up. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra decided after Willi Boskovsky to have 7 New Years Concerts with Lorin Maazel (1980-86). Then they implanted the guest conductor's system. Sony as a record company has nothing to do with which conductor the VPO chooses! :P (In the worst case Sony could be easily replaced by another record company.) Sony only came into play because they took over RCA! ;) The 1989 New Years Concert recording with Carlos Kleiber was made by RCA! The 1992 was already Sony ... ;)

Like many operas, Ritter Pazman contains a ballet, of which the csardas is the concluding number.
