Yep. I interpreted it (without the options listed) as being detention, as opposed to what he should have gotten for such a blatant and dangerous breach of the Statute of Secrecy - expulsion (the privileges of fame strike again). And McGonagal literally assigns detention and a letter home to their parents. It's only later, after she gave him detention, that Lockhart claimed Harry for it.

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate that every Christmas Hedwig brought Harry a present from the Dursley’s. Now the presents were garbage but that’s not the important part. The important part is Harry never sent Hedwig to Privet Drive to collect a present, and even if the Dursley’s has a way to summon her for a delivery , they wouldn’t have , which means that every Christmas Hedwig took it upon herself to fly back to Privet Drive and peck the Dursley’s , who hate her, to make sure that Harry gets a present from his aunt and uncle . She probably didn’t even know that the presents were bad, she probably thought that she was doing a good job and if your not crying your a monster.

I would actually argue that Ben was even more current, because she's not the one who said that he should write letters, so she just gave him detention. Lockheart then decided that he wanted him to sign fanmail with him.

I totally agree with Ben getting a point for “detention”. That /is/ what McGonagall gives both Harry and Ron. It isn’t until way later that they get specified w/ helping Lockhart and the trophy room, but they’re still detentions. It’s an oddly phrased question that definitely makes more sense when you have the multiple choice.

Not only does it shove that Harry doesn't have parents in your face again, but what *TRULY* is the threat of writing 'home' for Harry? Are the Dursley's gonna be cross with him after the whole year passes and he goes 'home'? Are they gonna send him a howler about how disappointed they are in him? To Harry, the ONLY bad thing to come from this was detention. The fear of expulsion was just lifted from him heart, and he doesn't have to worry about literally any repercussions from 'a letter home'.(Aside from maybe Molly scolding him, which is entirely funneled into the howler to Ron.)

What REALLY is the punishment of Harry having a letter written 'home'? In 1, they have free range. In 2, they attempt to keep his owl locked up and bar his window. But starting with 3, they dare not even raise their voices around him if he's triggered. Even when they get attacked in 5 by the dementors, they do nothing but quip down at him. My point is, that punishment still puzzles me.

By all standards they should have been expelled or have been exempt from the grounds for a period, what they did could have revealed the whole wizarding world, there are other ways to get to hogwarts... They might miss the feast but they could have gone back to the weasleys place through flu powder and then requested for Dumbledore to open one of the fireplaces in hogwarts But it doesnt make for good storytelling so detention and nearly getting expelled will have to do

I meant that once Dumbledore received a letter from Harry he would try to send them to Hogsmeade via floo network and have a teacher recover them rather than to get them straight to castle with the powder. It's been a hot minute since I read that series but I don't recall many situation when the Hogwarts' floo network has been connected to the outside world. It seems like it could lead to some possible security breaches (not that there isn't plenty already there, lol). Agreed on Molly and Arthur, that would be a smart thing to do but Harry and Ron aren't the brightest.

In all practicality, If they got a letter to Hogwarts, Dumbledore would probably just have a teacher Apparate to them. Then the teacher would likely escort them to a friendly fireplace hooked up to the Floo Network. I always liked the whole 'steal the car' thing though, on the basis that its the sort of logic a couple of panicking pre-teens might come up with.

Hey, J and Ben, your theories are awesome, and I'd like to share a hipothesis I thought of while reading Chamber of Secrets today: what if voldemort's plan had succeeded and he came back to full power from the diary's memory (which, as we all know, is a horcrux)? Would that mean there would now be two Voldemorts lurking around (the 0.78125% of his soul in the forests of Albania, and the 50% of his soul that came back from the diary)? I'd also like to say that I think this kinda makes sense when you consider how the Tom in the diary needed to learn all about his future from Ginny (or the future of the other half of his soul for that matter)...

According to the movie at least, McGonnagall told them she'd write to parents and that they would serve detention. There was no distinction as to what the detention would be because they hadn't met the new DADA teacher at the feast. Snape lectured them before they could go to the great hall. They missed the sorting during this scene.

we do, just not for people/names. like we would say "What is this food called" "Waffles", but then "What is your dog's name?" not "what is your dog called"

I would say that even in America its not really that weird to ask "What is (x) called?" but the fact that it leaves open more that just name as a response makes it a bad way to word the question.

I think it is the difference in legal names vs nicknames. Some might have a certain given name but go by their middle name, an abbreviation, or a nickname.
