Jāzeps Vītols - Symphony in E minor (1887)

This Symphony is very attractive for the wonderful orchestration throughout: we hear different colors constantly, from the delicate, to the sparse, playful, and the brassy. His orchestration sense is incredible for a 24-year old composer. Obviously, his handling of tonality is superb as well. And, this shows a melodic gift too, like that of many of his Russian predecessors and contemporaries. Tchaikovsky's coloristic spirit lives on (Rimsky-Korsakov's too)!

It actually predates most of them. I love several of Glazunov's symphonies, but this one is probably bolder. It would be good to hear Vītols's second symphony some day.

Yes, it's a great symphony....I heard echoes of Glière's 2nd and Rimsky....but this Vitols is momentous!
