Enjoyed the work, especially the climax that closes Movement I (~14:00 - 15:10); and the energetic Scherzo (III) !

Thanks for a different version of this much neglected symphony. Corentin Boissier uploaded the 1920 (3-movement version) in 2012. I think that the 3-movement version dates from 1920 whereas the 4-movement version dates from 1937, but I cannot be sure. Grove Music online gives the following: Sym. ‘Levendiá’ [Valour], chorus, orch, 1920, rev. 1937, 1952. Ted

Kalomiris created the whole four-part symphony from 1918 to 1920. But he was a man who always made revisions to his works, so you might have listened to some later revision of the piece.

I think there never was a three-movement version of this symphony. That earlier upload does not include the fourth choral movement of the complete Byron Fidetzis performance as released on Lyra. I have no idea why it was omitted, and the notes that accompany that upload are misleading.

Lebrecht described this work as "signifying youthful vigor and national liberation, [but] collapses into banality that is both decadent and unwholesome-the kind of triumphal finale that civilized Germans gave up writing after 1870." I disagree with the second part of his critique. Greece gained much after WWI and 1920 was an important election year. If an "over the top" nationalistic piece be written to honor one's country, THIS was the time to do it and well done it was.

Around this time, there's a lot of this sort of national affirmation going on, of course; also listen to Martinu's Czech Rhapsody. This is far from my favorite work, to be honest, but honestly Lebrecht is the worst party to turn to in order to gain an understanding of this repertory. The word "wholesome" has no place in art criticism.

@@bomcabedal I agree, Martinu's early Czech Rhapsody isn't very appealing and hardly shows this amazing composer at his best. But I'd rather listen to that than this symphony. For once on You Tube I've found a work where neglect has been justified.

Ghastly composition. 46 minutes of pure tedium.
@bomcabedal5 жыл бұрын
To be fair, listening to the entire "46 minutes of pure tedium" is a bit like saying "I didn't lose that guy out of my sight when he did nothing for three hours".

@@bomcabedal Brilliant (and hilarious) observation! "Yes, the 40 volumes of his complete works were boring". I had to skip around as I didn't find anything as compelling as Skalkotas, but it has some moments but is very Germania sounding at the end (I guess that's why you were commenting on Lebrecht and Wagnerism.

@@bomcabedal To also be fair, we listen in hopes of finding a hidden gem from a new composer, or something to make a work memorable. Unfortunately, not this time. I agree that it's tedious, boring, disjointed, and ignorable. I only made it half-way... :-)
