I took the time to go to her website and watch the videos of her performances. She is mesmerizing and I thank you, Shankar, for bringing her to my attention. Unfortunately, Americans don't get exposed enough to music of other cultures. Her voice is the closest thing I've heard to sounding like an actual instrument. And her passion and storytelling come through vividly with her movements. And I love her contemporary interpretation, in particular, in Fusion in Raga Jog. Amazing!

Even after 11 years, I still find something new on this song. Nirali's voice is so original (in "western" meaning).

Very rough translation: "Go, go away to your temple. Mother-in-law/sister-in-law can hear you. "hum to sadarang tum ko chaahat hai" - (lyrics in this rendition. EDIT -- From a commenter below, this means "I love you", and I think that makes sense. But I learnt a variation "Suna ho Sadarang tum ko chaahat hai" - this means, "I heard Sadarang likes you" "Kya tuma hum se chalana diya"/"Kya tum hum ko thagana diya" Did you trick me?" -Sadarang (18th century Mughal court musician, wiki for more info)

@Gayattrri 💙 Thanks for your comment. Looking back at my 9-year old comment I see my immaturity in translating our music reflected from back then (though I certainly had the passion and curiosity). What I would change now is that there is perhaps no such thing as a lyrics dispute. Traditional bandishes have tons of variations on wording, reflective of where one learnt it from. Thanks for the comment. I do think Sadarang refers to the composer when the lyrics are "suna ho Sadarang tumko chahat hai" (since he has composed a lot of khayals and puts his pen name in them), but it's a beautiful double meaning you wrote about that works well for "hum ko sadaranga tum ko chaahat hai". I see my comment got some unanticipated attention. I do not have a strong command over Hindi or Brij bhasha, nor do I know the context of the times this bandish was written, so it's possible I made mistakes in understanding the intent of the bandish. I've decided to delete that part of the comment and tweak the translation a bit.

Ja ja re Apne mandirwa Oh Krishna Go back to your temple Sudh pavengi Saas nanadiya Mother and sister-in-law would come back to senses Sunhun sadarang Tumko chahat hai I've heard Sadarang loves you Kya tum humse chhal na kiya? Have you not cheated on me? Only in saguna bhakti you can complain scold fight with or jealous of the supreme lord Shree Hari like a friend beloved mother sister brother etc Jai Shree Ram Jai Shree Krishna
