The essential arc of the story is going from Janardhan seeking heartbreak & pain to get recognition to Jordan at his lowest, with all the recognition in the world, begging that "Whatever happens...My heart shouldn't break" In the beginning, he will go to any length for that pain. By the end he is willing to go to any length to save himself from it. Remember, he doesn't drink and only does so with Heer - after the hospital scene he is showing up drunk to numb the pain. The look the old veteran musician ( Ranbir's great uncle and legendary actor Shammi Kapoor) gives is of concern - he knows the sheer talent of Jordan but sees that he is self-destructing. The movie is highly symbolic and poetic - the cruel joke is even after losing Heer Jordan keeps on becoming more famous. He is at a point where he doesn't care at all about it - but has it in abundance. It's like the western concept of "selling your soul" - Jordan "trades his heart." Almost like a deal with the Devil, unlimited fame & adulation for unlimited pain and heartbreak.

@@swatisaini6447 100% - and they also did a great job adding its own layer of complexity to it. In the actual fable (atleast the most popular version) Ranjha perishes after eating Heer's poisoned food. In Rockstar, Jordan has to live and suffer - that's probably because there is an unabashed selfishness to him for which he must pay the price.

Rockstar, Highway, Tamasha are hard hitting Imtiaz Ali trilogy. These films go way deeper in philosophical and societal povs like he started Rockstar with that Rumi quote- "Beyond right and wrong there is a field, will meet you there". Jab Harry Met Sajal also tries to do the same but failed to meet these trilogy's gold standards. Be it Laila Majnu or Cocktail or any of his films there is unique philosophical under current but with similar story set up. That's why he gets criticism that all his movies are the same. So he has very divisive but extreme fan following either you strongly admire him or strongly hate him!

Really hope you watch TAMASHA next. One of the best told stories in recent years. Ranbir and Deepika BECOME Ved and Tara, the acting is fantastic. The movie was shot after their real-life breakup. The songs are beautiful. It is a story for story-tellers, lovers of cinema, but also for regular folks who wanted to do something else in life but ended up at a desk job. Really hope Jaby and Syntell watch it soon.

Earlier in the movie, when referring to Jordan, the older musician says "He won't stay in your cage" to Dhingra, which is an interesting line because ultimately, Jordan ends up building his own cage around himself where no one is there for him and he is all alone.

1. Her husband wasn't a bad catch, they just didn't fit. Him dropping her off at her parents meant that he was done with her, at least this version of her. 2. The doctor can find out if Heer's pregnant but while they do that, Mandy wants assurance from Jordan that they were taking precautions, as you do when you panic. 3. Her disease means her body can't make blood, which Jordan points out too. Getting pregnant means the foetus pulls blood from her already feeble body. 4. Jordan didn't talk back to Khatana bhai even at his perceived lowest. When he shoved him, it was a sign that he was done with this world, his last connection to humanity had been snapped. This was his true lowest. (He probably continues to sing his heart out as it might be the only time he can feel Heer with him. Probably.)

One more voice in favor of Tamasha watch-along! You mentioned Romeo-Juliette. India also has several romantic-tragedies in it's literature, one of which is Heer-Ranjha (and widely believed to be a true 15-16th Century story) . Nargis' character is named after Heer. The only problem I have with you reacting to this is you won't be able to fully understand what the music is conveying just through subtitles. It's such a great soundtrack by Mohit, most of it's tracks are still in my Spotify playlist. So happy that you enjoyed the movie. Hoping you watch and bawl with Tamasha!

Even Indian dint understand the movie as u guys did, bcz we are always spoon fed. Maybe the only thing u guys dint understand was she being pregnant & she died bcz of that bcz she already was lacking blood, & wen u r pregnant all ur blood will used for baby creating process & that eventually killed her even though she was gradually recovering. So Indirectly the love killed her.

I watched this film just after my break up without knowing what it was about and it broke me into pieces as it was too relatable at that time.. the songs from this film are so good yet everytime I tries listening to one, I'll sob.. I never recovered.. it was worthy tho..such a great film..

Man i love imtiaz ali so much..Sadly,he doesn’t get as much appreciation in bollywood as he deserves..The guy is a poet and philosopher..Recently i watched the romantics on netflix and they spoke so much in detail about yash chopra and his movies and how he sees romance and i realized i never felt anything like that for their movies like ddlj, veer zaara, chandni, lamhe nd all..Those are just movies to me..But i have felt all that and much more about imtiaz’s movies..His movies have made me feel the romance, pain, poetry and so much..U r consumed as a whole by imtiaz’s films..even his not so good ones like jab harry and love aaj kal part 2 i liked them more than most films..
