Jack 12 vs Russell's 13 - Can Tennessee Whiskey Top Kentucky Bourbon?

I am half jealous half grateful. Half living vicariously, half living it. Half being a hater, half calling people haters. I have JD12 and I picked it up at a steal ($90), but have never seen Russell's 13 in the wild. I am Harvey Dent. Awesome video! I hated it.

Being fortunate enough to have both of these, and having off tomorrow as I go on vacation, I decided to do this alongside your video. I came up with nose to JD, palate to Russels, and then the finish to the JD. The flavor just goes on and on. Cheers Mr Porter, and thanks for all the entertainment.

Starting to feel lucky i grabbed a Michter's 10 2023. Almost passed on it but grabbed it and a 4 roses LE 2022. Haven't opened the Michter's yet. Going to wait til it is autumn. I want the weather to be perfect for this experience. Cheers Matt

Thanks Matt, nice review! For me, pallet is the most important part of the experience, although whiskey does last alot longer if you try to consume it primarily by sniffing / nosing… finish is what you are just left to think about when the glass is, sniff(sad), empty.

Love the head to head, but gotta respectfully disagree with ya lol I personally found jd 12 to be wonderful for about 15 seconds, then the jack daniels note hits me in the finish and ruins it for me. While the RR is consistent and more classically done. Somehow, JD ryes dont have that strong jack note, and i enjoy those quite a bit, but I cant get past that note in their bourbons...cheers, Matt!

Here where I am in Ny we never seem to get the big releases. I asked my local store to put me down if they got a JD12. To my surprised within a few weeks I got a call. They got some in and had one for me at msrp. I still haven’t cracked it (just waiting on a special day). I felt extremely lucky lok

Had the JD12 but it was a sample between Elmer T Lee and Thomas H Handy. Love store picks of RR and I would love to find a bottle of that for myself. Great face-off!

I'm still looking for RR13, but between the M10B and JD12.. JD12 winds hands down. I do really enjoy the M10 Bourbon though! The pour I've had of an older batch of RR13 was incredible though but I didn't compare back to back against the JD12.

Once the JD12 has time to open up (aka not the neck pour) I agree it is much better than RR13, which says a lot since RR13 is amazing

Same but I cracked the 10. While the 10 is good, wasn’t blown away. The nose is better than the palate IMO. But also need to fresh crack the 12 and let that thing air out

Just got a RR13 and need to dive into it. JD12 has one of the best noses but such a dissatisfying finish in my opinion. Ill want to compare these blind myself too so as to avoid bias

That Jack 12 is some of the best stuff I've ever had. It definitely has many Coy Hill characteristics, just at a lower proof.

12 yr is very tough to beat. Hard to find. I will drink russels 13 as a sipper any day because it is available right now. JD 12 yr is superior

The Jack 12 kicks Mitcher’s 10 year butt. Mitcher’s 10 is truly exceptional so you know that JD 12 is freaking phenomenal!! Haven’t tried the RR13 but trying (ISO) to get a date with it. Hopefully goes better than my regular dating situation. We all can’t be as sexy as Mr. Porter!!

To my untrained palate, both of these are phenomenal bottles. They each offer completely different amazing experiences. Choosing one over the other would be a difficult decision, so why not choose both? Fortunately, both were obtained at MSRP. I feel the JD12 is the better value, and RR13 is a bit overpriced at $149.

I agree that JD12 is a little better than RR13... 8.0 to 7.8 on my scale... But both fell short of my crazy high expectations.... Life lesson... Don't have crazy high expectations to avoid disappointment. I agree, the nose on the JD12 is one of the best things you'll ever smell... But after that high, high note I found the palette to just be "meh." Good flavors but VERY muted. Then the finish comes back nicely. As is often the case, if you can find these at MSRP they are phenomenal bottles at that price point. But I don't think either are worth what they get on secondary... But... Most things aren't... Except the Coy Hill... That one is probably worth it.

Somehow, American Whiskey surpassed Scotch Whisky as the most pretentious and overpriced Whisk(e)y spirit in the world. I think it’s even worse than Japanese Whisky. Just as proof of this, Jack Daniels 10 and 12 years and Russell’s 13 year go for over $200 a bottle. In comparison, I can head to any liquor store and buy a 10-14 year Arran, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain…etc, for $50-$90. These Whiskies are just about better in every way possible. It’s time to let these American Distilleries know we want the age statements without the ridiculous prices. This is why Elijah Craig and Knob Creek are killing it for value in age stated bourbon. That’s my take.
